NL – Aleksandra Mir reist met haar projecten de wereld rond om de socio-culturele dynamiek ter plekke te onderzoeken. Voor haar performance-werk ‘The Big Umbrella (La Martinique)’ trok Mir met een enorme, surrealistisch uitvergrote paraplu door de straten van zes verschillende steden, vertrekkende in Parijs in 2003 en daarna door Londen, Dresden, Kopenhagen, Martinique en New York. Onderweg nodigde ze passanten uit onder deze speciaal ontworpen paraplu – tweemaal zo groot als de grootste paraplu op de markt, waaronder zestien mensen kunnen schuilen. Ook dit project toont hoe individuen omgaan met elkaar en met omgevingsfactoren – in dit geval de weersomstandigheden. Haar wandelingen documenteerde Mir met zes foto’s per locatie. De reeks die hier wordt getoond is een neerslag van haar halte in Martinique.
ENG – Aleksandra Mir takes her projects all over the world as a means of studying the local socio-cultural dynamics. For her performative work ‘The Big Umbrella (La Martinique)’ she took a huge, surrealistically magnified umbrella through the streets of six cities, starting in Paris in 2003 and then going on to London, Dresden, Copenhagen, Martinique and New York. Along the way she invited passers-by to come under this specially designed umbrella; it is twice as big as the largest umbrella on the market, and sixteen people can shelter under it. This project too shows how individuals deal with each other and with factors in their surroundings – in this case the weather. Mir has documented her walks in six photos per location. The series shown here is a report of her stay in Martinique.
FR – Aleksandra Mir fait le tour du monde avec ses projets pour étudier sur place la dynamique socioculturelle. Pour sa performance ‘The Big Umbrella (La Martinique)’, Mir a ouvert un parapluie surréaliste surdimensionné dans les rues de six villes différentes, en commendant par Paris en 2003, puis Londres, Dresde, Copenhague, la Martinique et New York. En route, elle invitait les passants sous son parapluie sur mesure (deux fois plus grand que le plus grand parapluie sur le marché; il peut abriter seize personnes). Ce projet montre lui aussi l'interaction des individus entre eux et avec des éléments de l'environnement, ici les conditions météorologiques. Mir a documenté ses promenades avec six photos par lieu. La série exposée ici est un rapport de son voyage en Martinique.
