The Collector of Art (somewhere in Africa there is a great black man collecting art from Europe and America, buying his Picasso for 23 coconuts....)

NL – Het idee voor dit werk ontstond toen Solakov in de collectie van het Rietberg Museum in Zürich voorwerpen uit Afrika en Azië aantrof die door rijke Zwitserse verzamelaars aan het museum waren geschonken. ‘The Collector of Art’ kan worden gezien als een tentoonstelling binnen deze tentoonstelling: in een karikaturale Afrikaanse hut met Afrikaanse namaak-snuisterijen zijn ook échte kunstwerken uit de S.M.A.K.-collectie ondergebracht. Door te suggereren dat deze kunst werd verzameld door een Afrikaan, neemt Solakov niet enkel de westers georiënteerde kunstwereld op de korrel, maar ook het clichébeeld dat diezelfde wereld nog altijd van Afrika heeft. Met dit werk zet Solakov de kunstwereld op zijn kop: hij laat zijn zwarte verzamelaar een Bruce Nauman ruilen tegen twee antilopenbotten en een Picasso tegen 23 kokosnoten.

ENG – The idea for this work arose when Solakov came upon objects from Africa and Asia in the Rietburg Museum collection in Zurich, donated to the museum by wealthy Swiss collectors. ‘The Collector of Art’ can be seen as an exhibition within this exhibition: in a caricature of an African hut with fake African trinkets, real works of art from the S.M.A.K. collection have been included. By suggesting that this art was collected by an African, Solakov not only chides the western-oriented art world but also exposes the cliché image that very same art world still has of Africa. This Solakov work turns the art world upside down: he permits his black collector to exchange a Bruce Nauman for two antelope bones and a Picasso for 23 coconuts.

FR - Solakov eut l’idée de cette oeuvre en découvrant, dans la collection du Rieberg Museum de Zürich, des objets originaires d’Afrique et d’Asie offerts au musée par de riches collectionneurs suisses. ‘The Collector of Art’ peut être considéré comme une exposition dans l’exposition: de véritables oeuvres d’art du S.M.A.K. ont été disposées dans une hutte africaine caricaturale contenant aussi des babioles africaines. En suggérant que cet art a été collectionné par un Africain, Solakov ne dénonce pas seulement le monde de l’art orienté de l’Occident, mais aussi les clichés que ce même monde a encore toujours de l’Afrique. Avec cette oeuvre, Solakov bouscule le monde de l’art: son collectionneur noir échange un Bruce Nauman contre deux os d’antilope et un Picasso contre 23 noix de coco.
