The Elephant

NL - Onze ogen (en andere zintuigen) nemen de omgeving waar, maar onze hersenen verwerken die indrukken en geven er betekenis aan naar gelang onze sociale, geografische en persoonlijke achtergrond. Met dit verschil tussen ‘kijken’ en ‘zien’ speelt Alam in zijn oeuvre. Hier zien we op het eerste gezicht een abstracte compositie met geometrische vormen. Maar na het lezen van de titel, krijgt de voorstelling plots betekenis en kunnen we niet meer zien wat we eerst zagen. Het schilderij wordt een theatrale doorkijk op een olifant, die we elk op onze eigen manier vervolledigen in ons hoofd.

ENG - Our eyes (and other senses) absorb our surroundings, but our brains process these impressions and give meaning to them in accordance with our social, geographical and personal background. Alam plays with the difference between ‘looking’ and ‘seeing’ in his oeuvre. At first glance, we see an abstract composition with geometric shapes. After we read the title, however, the image is suddenly imbued with meaning and we can no longer see what we first saw. The painting becomes a theatrical vista of an elephant, which each of us completes in our own head in our own way.

FR - Nos yeux (et les autres sens) observent l’environnement, mais notre cerveau transforme ces impressions et leur donne une signification en fonction de nos antécédents sociaux, géographiques et personnels. Alam joue avec cette différence entre ‘regarder’ et ‘voir’ dans son oeuvre. Ici, nous voyons à première vue une composition abstraite avec des formes géométriques. Mais après avoir lu le titre, la présentation prend subitement du sens et nous ne pouvons plus voir ce que nous avions vu en premier lieu. La peinture devient une échappée théâtrale sur un éléphant, que nous complétons dans notre tête chacun à notre manière.
