NL – In zijn sculpturen gaat Royden Rabinowitch op zoek naar een nieuwe, abstracte ervaring van de ruimte, voornamelijk gebaseerd op vormelijke intuïtie. Zijn vroege werk ‘The Universal Plumb Bob’ is een voorbode van dit gedachtegoed. Het schietlood wordt op zo’n geometrische wijze opgesteld in de ruimte dat alle verticale lijnen in zijn architecturale omgeving zich met deze absolute standaard moeten meten. We zouden ons kunnen inbeelden dat dit aan de zwaartekracht onderhevige schietlood functioneert als een kleinschalige variant van de meterslange, automatisch ronddraaiende slinger waarmee Foucault in 1850 bewees dat de aarde rond haar as draait.
ENG – In his sculptures, Royden Rabinowitch seeks a new, abstract experience of space, based primarily on an intuitive approach to form. His early piece ‘The Universal Plumb Bob’ was an early foretaste of these ideas. This plumb bob is hung in the room geometrically so that all the vertical lines in its architectural surroundings have to measure themselves against this absolute standard. We can imagine that this plumb bob, subject to gravity as it is, acts as a small-scale variant on the automatically turning pendulum many meters long which, in 1850, Foucault used to prove that the earth revolves around its axis.
FR – Royden Rabinowitch par en quête dans ses nouvelles sculptures d’une nouvelle expérience abstraite de l’espace essentiellement basée sur l’intuition formelle. Son œuvre de ‘The Universal Plumb Bob’ annonçait déjà cette vision. Le fil à plomb est disposé dans l’espace d’une manière géométrique de telle sorte que toutes les lignes verticales de son environnement architectural doivent se mesurer à cette norme absolue. On pourrait imaginer que ce fil à plomb soumis à la force de gravité fonctionne comme une variante à échelle réduite du long pendule à oscillation automatique avec lequel Foucault prouva en 1850 que la terre tournait autour de son axe.
