NL – Murillo beschouwt zijn schilderijen als de residuen van hun maakproces. Hij begint met het verknippen van schilderdoek, waarna hij de stukken afzonderlijk bewerkt met krabbels en krassen in olieverf. Vervolgens belanden de stukken op de vloer van zijn atelier en worden ze blootgesteld aan vuil. Ze moeten op die manier ‘besmet’ raken door het werk in het atelier. Pas als dat proces ver genoeg gevorderd is, worden stukken doek geselecteerd en aan elkaar gestikt. Soms voegt Murillo aan het eind nog een woord toe. Die woorden staan symbool voor ‘displacement’: ze verliezen hun betekenis niet, maar zijn ontheemd want opgenomen op een drager die er vreemd aan is.

ENG – Murillo considers his paintings as the residues of their creative process. He starts by cutting up the canvas, after which he individually works on the pieces, adding scribbles and scratches in oil paint. The pieces then end up on the floor of his studio and are exposed to the debris there. The aim of this process is for them to be ‘contaminated’ by work going on in the studio. Pieces of canvas are only selected and stitched together once the process is sufficiently advanced. Murillo sometimes adds a word at the end. The words symbolise displacement: they do not lose their meaning, but are displaced because they appear on a carrier that is alien to them.

FR - Murillo considère ses peintures comme les résidus de leur processus de réalisation. Il commence par découper la toile, ensuite il transforme les morceaux séparément en faisant des éraflures et des gribouillis à la peinture à l’huile. Puis, les morceaux atterrissent sur le sol de son atelier où ils sont exposés à la saleté. De cette manière, ils doivent être ‘contaminés’ par le travail dans l’atelier. Ce n’est que lorsque ce processus est assez avancé que les morceaux de toile sont sélectionnés et cousus l’un à l’autre. Murillo ajoute parfois un mot à la fin. Ces mots symbolisent le ‘displacement’: ils ne perdent pas leur sens, mais sont déracinés, parce qu’ils sont repris sur un support qui leur est étranger.
