Untitled Conversation (The Locksmith)

NL - Grigely maakte een reeks ‘Untitled Conversations’, kunstwerken waarin hij vertrekt van gesprekken die hij voerde, in uiteenlopende contexten en met de meest diverse mensen. De ondertitel biedt telkens de sleutel om het werk te lezen of betekenis te geven. Hier toont hij een schets die de sleutelmaker (the locksmith) maakte om Grigely uit te leggen waarom de bijgemaakte sleutel dikker was dan de oorspronkelijke. De laatste zin van de kunstenaars tekst geeft droogjes aan dat de sleutel toch niet bleek te werken. In zijn werken geeft Grigely vanuit zijn fysieke beperking zijn heel eigen kijk op converseren. Door gebruik te maken van geschreven en ‘getekende’ taal beschrijft de kunstenaar waargebeurde situaties die we, omwille van het conceptuele karakter van zijn werk, evengoed als fictie kunnen lezen en zelfs in onze verbeelding kunnen aanvullen of verrijken.

ENG - ‘Untitled Conversations’ is a series of artworks that Grigely made in response to his discussions with diverse people, and in a wide variety of contexts. Each time, the subtitle provides the key to reading the work or finding its meaning. Here, he shows a sketch made by a locksmith to explain to Grigely why the copied key was thicker than the original. The final sentence of the artist’s text dryly explains that, nevertheless, the key did not appear to function. In his works, Grigely presents his highly original take on the act of conversing, as viewed through the lens of his physical impairment. By making use of written and ‘drawn’ language, the artist describes real-life situations which, due to the conceptual nature of his work, we can nevertheless read as fiction, and can even supplement or embellish in our imagination.

FR - Grigely a réalisé une série ‘Untitled Conversations’, des oeuvres d’art où il part de conversations qu’il a eues, dans des contextes différents et avec les personnes les plus variées. Le sous-titre offre à chaque fois la clé qui permet de lire l’oeuvre ou de lui donner un sens. Ici, il montre l’esquisse réalisée par le serrurier (the locksmith) pour expliquer à Grigely pourquoi la clé refaite était plus épaisse que l’originale. La dernière phrase du texte de l’artiste indique sèchement que la clé ne semblait malgré tout pas fonctionner. Dans ses oeuvres, Grigely donne une vision très personnelle de la conversation en partant de son handicap physique. En se servant du langage écrit et ‘dessiné’, l’artiste décrit des situations qui se sont vraiment passées et que nous pouvons tout aussi bien lire comme une fiction et même compléter ou enrichir dans notre imagination, vu le caractère conceptuel de son oeuvre.
