Without an Ending There is no Beginning

NL - Dit recente werk is de fysieke neerslag in installatievorm van het Kopeika Project, een actie van de kunstenaar tijdens Manifesta 10 in 2014 in Sint-Petersburg. Alÿs beschreef de actie als volgt: “Wanneer we jong waren, deelden mijn broer en ik een Lada Riva van 1981. Op een dag besloten we om aan onze burgerlijke Belgische maatschappij te ontsnappen en reden we naar Leningrad. Maar onze auto begaf het en snel daarna weken onze levens uiteen. Dertig jaar later nodigde ik mijn broer uit om van België naar Sint-Petersburg te rijden, dit keer in een Lada Kopeika van 1977. Bij aankomst zouden we de auto tegen een boom op de binnenplaats van het Winterpaleis laten crashen, samen met de illusies van onze jeugd. Zonder einde is er geen begin.” Op de tafel ligt documentatiemateriaal van het project. Met de installatie suggereert Alÿs dat ultieme vrijheid een illusie is en dat we altijd onderworpen blijven aan een sturend ‘overheidsapparaat’. Door de auto te laten crashen, beëindigt de kunstenaar de illusie van vrijheid om een nieuwe vrijheid – a new beginning – te veroveren.

ENG - This recent work is the physical result, in installation form, of the Kopeika Project, an action by the artist during Manifesta 10 in 2014, in Saint Petersburg. Alÿs described the action as follows: “When we were young, my brother and I shared a Lada Riva from 1981. One day we decided to escape from our bourgeois Belgian society and drove to Leningrad. But our car gave up and soon after our lives went in different directions. Thirty years later I invited my brother to drive from Belgium to Saint Petersburg, this time in a Lada Kopeika from 1977. When we arrived we would let the car crash into a tree on the courtyard of the Winter Palace, together with the illusions of our youth. Without an ending there is no beginning." On the table lies documentation related to the project. With the installation Alÿs suggests that ultimate freedom is an illusion and that we continue to be subjected to a controlling 'government apparatus'. By allowing the car to crash, the artist ends the illusion of freedom to conquer a new freedom – a new beginning.

Alÿs a fait la description suivante de cette action: “Lorsque nous étions jeunes, mon frère et moi partagions une Lada Riva de 1981. Un beau jour, nous avons décidé d’échapper à notre société bourgeoise en Belgique et de nous diriger vers Leningrad. Mais notre voiture a rendu l’âme et rapidement nos chemins se sont séparés. Trente ans plus tard, j’ai invité mon frère à nous rendre en voiture de Belgique à Saint-Petersbourg, cette fois-ci dans une Lada Kopeika de 1977. A l’arrivée, on ferait emboutir la voiture contre un arbre dans la cour intérieure de Palais d’Hiver, emportant les illusions de notre jeunesse. Il n’y a pas de début sans fin.” Du matériel de documentation du projet est posé sur la table. Avec cette installation, Alÿs suggère que la liberté ultime est une illusion et que nous restons toujours assujettis à un ‘appareil public’ directeur. En faisant emboutir la voiture, l’artiste met un terme à l’illusion de liberté pour conquérir une nouvelle liberté – a new beginning.
