1 m 1 step

NL – Vanaf de vroege jaren ‘70 manifesteerde stanley brouwns persoonlijke ‘stap’ zich meer en meer als meeteenheid voor afstand in zijn werk. Op deze manier benaderde hij de concepten afstand en beweging meer intuïtief, op basis van toeval. De editie ‘1 m 1 step’, die brouwn op 500 exemplaren uitgaf naar aanleiding van een overzichtstentoonstelling in het Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, is hiervan een mooi voorbeeld. Het werk bestaat uit niet meer dan een boekje van acht pagina’s, inclusief kartonnen cover, waarvan de randen van twee pagina’s – de eerste volledig, de tweede gedeeltelijk – zwart werden gemaakt. Op elke pagina staat droogweg de vermelding ‘1m’ en ‘1step’. Opvallend: de totale ‘hoogte’ van het boekje is exact één meter, alsof brouwn ons wil bewustmaken van het feit dat deze universele afstandsmaat voor het creëren van een boek even absurd is als dat ze dit is voor de aanduiding van een afstand. Voor hem kan de maat van een doodgewone stap even goed dienen om afstand te meten. Dit streven naar een bevattelijke weergave van het begrip afstand en het ervaringsgerichte besef van de randvoorwaarden ervan – namelijk tijd, ruimte en beweging – zijn karakteristiek voor het werk van brouwn. Als is ‘bevattelijk’ hier relatief, want brouwns benadering is niet alleen zeer concreet maar tegelijk ook zeer abstract.

ENG – stanley brouwn’s personal ‘step’ assumed an increasingly prominent role in his oeuvre from the early 1970s onwards. It was a unit of measurement through which to represent distances. He thereby took a more intuitive and chance-based approach to the concepts of distance and movement. The edition ‘1 m 1 step’, which brouwn issued in an edition of 500 copies to mark his retrospective at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, is a fine example of this concept. The work consists of nothing more than an eight-page booklet, including the cardboard cover. The edges of two pages – the first completely, the second partially – are blackened. Each page is impersonally marked ‘1m’ and ‘1step’. It is interesting to note that the total ‘height’ of the booklet is exactly 1 metre, as though brouwn is highlighting the fact that it is no more absurd to use this universal unit of measurement for a book, as it is to record a distance. For him, the measure of an ordinary step is an entirely appropriate way of measuring distances. This pursuit of a comprehensible representation of the concept of distance and the experiential awareness of its preconditions – namely time, space and movement – are characteristic of brouwn’s oeuvre. Assuming that ‘comprehensible’ is even a relevant term in this context, because brouwn’s approach is not just highly specific but also inherently abstract.

FR - Dès le début des années 1970, le « pas » (step) personnel de stanley brouwn s’est manifesté de plus en plus comme unité de mesure de la distance dans son travail. Il aborde ainsi les notions de distance et de mouvement de manière plus intuitive, en se basant sur le hasard. L'édition « 1 m 1 step » (1m 1 pas), que brouwn a éditée à 500 exemplaires à l'occasion d'une rétrospective au Van Abbemuseum d'Eindhoven, en est un bel exemple. L'œuvre n'est rien d'autre qu'un livret de huit pages, couverture en carton comprise, dont les bords de deux pages - la première entièrement, la seconde partiellement - ont été noircis. Chaque page est sèchement marquée « 1m » et « 1step ». Fait remarquable : la « hauteur » totale du livret est exactement d'un mètre, comme si brouwn voulait nous faire prendre conscience du fait que cette mesure de distance universelle pour créer un livre est aussi absurde qu'elle l'est pour indiquer une distance. Pour lui, la mesure d'un pas ordinaire peut tout aussi bien servir à mesurer une distance. Cette recherche d'une représentation saisissable du concept de distance et la prise de conscience expérimentale de ses conditions préalables - à savoir le temps, l'espace et le mouvement - sont caractéristiques de l'œuvre de brouwn. Si le terme « saisissable » est ici relatif, c'est parce que l'approche de brouwn est à la fois très concrète et très abstraite.
