Space Fragment

NL – Sinds de jaren ‘70 gebruikt conceptueel kunstenaar stanley brouwn voor het weergeven van afstanden zijn eigen stap als meeteenheid. Door zijn lichaamsmaten – de ‘brouwn-maten’ – tegenover fysische standaardmaten te plaatsen, legt hij een verband tussen onze behoefte aan algemeen geldende communicatiemiddelen en onze individuele ervaring. Met ‘Space Fragment’ suggereert hij dat dit houten hoekobject deel uitmaakt van een grotere ruimte, die zich echter enkel in onze verbeelding ontplooit. Zo voltrekt zich een concrete bewustwording van tijd, ruimte en beweging.

ENG – Since the 1970s, the conceptual artist stanley brouwn has used his own stride as a unit of measurement to represent distances. By contrasting these body measurements – the ‘brouwn measurements’ – with standard physical measurements, he makes a link between our need for generally applicable means of communication and our individual experience. In ‘Space Fragment’ he suggests that this wooden corner object is part of a larger space that only unfolds in our imagination. This brings about a concrete awareness of time, space and movement.

FR – L’artiste conceptuel stanley brouwn utilise depuis les années 1970 son propre pas comme unité de mesure pour les distances. En opposant ces ‘mensurations brouwn’ aux mesures physiques standard, il met nos besoins en moyens de communication en liaison avec notre expérience individuelle. Il suggère avec ‘Space Fragment’ que cet objet de coin en bois fait partie d’un grand espace qui ne se déploie toutefois que dans notre imagination, créant ainsi une prise de conscience du temps, de l’espace et du mouvement.
