Battered Tears

NL – ‘Battered Tears’ is niet alleen sterk verwant met Oppenheims grote installaties uit de jaren ’80-’90, maar vertoont ook linken met zijn vroegere body art performances. In dit werk tast de kunstenaar de schemerzone af tussen de emotie verdriet en puur fysieke agressie. Twee gigantische tranen draaien als enorme boksballen rond in de ruimte. Ertussen hangen twee televisietoestellen waarop een figuur is te zien die als onder hypnose continu op een loopband blijft doorwandelen. De figuur lijkt van je te willen weglopen maar er is meer aan de hand: op zijn rug ter hoogte van zijn ellebogen bengelen twee bokshandschoenen en het masker op zijn achterhoofd versterkt zijn zwaarmoedige uitstraling. Video, een medium dat Oppenheim aanvankelijk enkel gebruikte als documentatiemiddel voor zijn artistieke acties met een tijdelijke impact, is in deze installatie als een volwaardig artistiek element geïntegreerd. Ook de link met wat de kunstenaar tijdens het uitvoeren van performances op een directe manier doorleefde, wordt in dit werk zichtbaar in de confrontatie met emotionele en fysieke pijn.

ENG – ‘Battered Tears’ is not only closely related to Oppenheim’s large installations from the 80s and 90s, but also displays connections with his earlier Body Art performances. In this work he explores the twilight zone between the emotion of sorrow and pure physical aggression. Two gigantic tears revolve like huge punch-balls. Between them hang two televisions showing a figure who keeps on walking on a treadmill as if under hypnosis. The figure seems to want to run away from you, but there is more to it than that: two boxing gloves dangle on his back level with his elbows and the mask on the back of his head reinforces his gloomy appearance. Video, which Oppenheim initially only used to document those artistic actions that had no more than a temporary impact, is integrated into this installation as a full artistic element. In this work, the link with what the artist directly experienced while putting on performances is also made visible in the confrontation with emotional and physical pain.

FR – ‘Battered Tears’ ne se situe pas uniquement dans la ligne des grandes installations d’Oppenheim des années 80-90, mais témoigne aussi de liens avec ses anciennes performances de body art. L’artiste explore ici la zone d’ombre entre cette émotion qu’est la tristesse et la pure agression physique. Deux gigantesques larmes tournoient dans l’espace comme d’énormes punching-balls. Au milieu sont suspendus deux écrans de télévision montrant un personnage parcourant un tapis de course en continu comme sous hypnose. Le personnage semble vouloir vous fuir mais il y a autre chose en jeu: sur son dos à hauteur de ses coudes pendent deux gants de boxe, et le masque qu’il porte à l’arrière de la tête renforce l’impression déprimante qu’il dégage. La vidéo, un support qu’Oppenheim n’utilisait initialement que comme mode de documentation de ses actions artistiques éphémères, est ici un élément artistique à part entière. Le lien avec l’expérience directe de l’artiste lors de ses performances est perceptible dans la confrontation avec la douleur émotionnelle et physique.
