Beauty goes Avant-garde

NL – In zijn sculpturen, tekeningen, brieven en performances brengt sjamaan-kunstenaar James Lee Byars de meest existentiële tegenstellingen samen: het spectaculaire en het onzichtbare, het weelderige en het kleine, het mystieke en het alledaagse. Uit deze tekening spreekt de kunstenaars romantische hang naar ultieme perfectie en sublieme schoonheid. Met rode inkt schreef hij in zwierige letters ‘Beauty goes avant-garde’ (schoonheid gaat de avant-gardistische toer op). Met een verfijnde structuur van sterretjes versierde hij de tekst minutieus als was het een middeleeuws verlucht manuscript of oosterse kalligrafie. Het über-esthetische totaalbeeld doet ook denken aan een pagina uit een herbarium of fijn borduurwerk.

ENG – In his sculptures, drawings, letters and performances, the shaman and artist James Lee Byars brought together the most existential contradictions: the spectacular and the invisible, the extravagant and the small, the mystical and the commonplace. This drawing expresses the artist’s romantic penchant for ultimate perfection and sublime beauty. He wrote ‘Beauty goes avant-garde’ in flamboyant letters using red ink. He decorated the text meticulously with a fine pattern of stars as if it was an illuminated mediaeval manuscript or oriental calligraphy. The super-aesthetic overall image is also reminiscent of a page from a herbarium or fine embroidery.

FR – Dans ses sculptures, dessins, lettres et performances, l’artiste chaman James Lee Byars rassemble les contradictions les plus existentielles: le spectaculaire et l’invisible, le luxuriant et le petit, le mystique et le quotidien. Dans ce dessin s’exprime la propension romantique de l’artiste vers la perfection ultime et la beauté sublime. À l’encre rouge, il a écrit en lettres gracieuses ‘Beauty goes avant-garde’ (‘La beauté se met à l’avant-garde). Il a minutieusement ornementé le texte d’une structure raffinée d’étoiles, comme s’il s’agissait d’une illustration dans un manuscrit médiéval ou d’une calligraphie orientale. L’ensemble sur-esthétique fait également penser à la page d’un herbier ou à une broderie fine.
