From here to the West and back

NL – In ‘From here to the West and back’ toont Koen van den Broek zich als ‘schilder on the road’. Hij kijkt uit het raam van zijn wagen en volgt de weg en het landschap, waarbij hij zijn fototoestel als schetsboek hanteert. Het onderscheid dat de menselijke interpretatie maakt tussen wat wel en wat niet belangrijk is, wordt vertroebeld door het gebruik van dit mechanische apparaat. Via van den Broeks fotografische blik wordt de werkelijkheid gezien door één lens, wat resulteert in één samengebald beeld. Het lijkt een noodzakelijke stap in een proces van deconstructie. Alle overbodige details worden geweerd en enkel essentiële aanduidingen van gras, weg en markeringen blijven overeind. Van den Broek behandelt het stedelijke Amerikaanse landschap steevast vanuit een constructieve beeldtaal: door middel van kleur deelt hij het vlak in en met kleurgrenzen creëert hij ruimtelijke afbakeningen. Deze abstraheringen verlenen de voorstelling een grafisch karakter en verwijderen haar van de werkelijkheid. Almaar meer aandacht gaat uit naar het vlak zelf, waarin zones uitgroeien tot picturale elementen. Van den Broek wil geen boodschap overbrengen, maar interesseert zich hoofdzakelijk voor de compositie van het beeld.

He looks out the window of his car and follows the road and the landscape, using his camera as a sketchbook. The distinction that human interpretation makes between what is important and what is not is blurred by the use of this mechanical device. Through van den Broek's photographic gaze, reality is seen through one lens, resulting in one compressed image. It seems a necessary step in a process of deconstruction. All unnecessary details are kept out and only essential indications of grass, road and markings remain. Van den Broek invariably treats the urban American landscape from a constructive visual language: using colour to divide the plane and colour boundaries to create spatial demarcations. These abstractions give the representation a graphic character and remove it from reality. More and more attention is paid to the surface itself, in which zones become pictorial elements. Van den Broek does not want to convey a message, but is mainly interested in the composition of the image.

Il regarde par la fenêtre de sa voiture et suit la route et le paysage, utilisant son appareil photo comme un carnet de croquis. La distinction que l'interprétation humaine fait entre ce qui est important et ce qui ne l'est pas est brouillée par l'utilisation de cet appareil mécanique. Grâce au regard photographique de van den Broek, la réalité est vue à travers un seul objectif, ce qui donne une image comprimée. Cela semble être une étape nécessaire dans un processus de déconstruction.
