Letters from Baghdad (drawings Invisible Beauty)

NL – Deze tekeningen uit de collectie van S.M.A.K. maken deel uit van ‘Letters from Baghdad’, een reeks tekeningen die als ware het een dagboek de tragedie van de terugkeer van de kunstenaar naar Bagdad verhaalt. Elk werk lijkt doordrongen van Atta Sabri’s zoektocht naar identiteit. Door namen op te schrijven van steden waar hij ooit was (Los Angeles, Londen, Erbil en Bagdad bv.) en vormelijk te verwijzen naar de kunstgeschiedenis die hij goed kent, kunnen we de tekeningen lezen als een uitgetekende biografie. De problematiek van een land vloeit in deze tekeningen samen met die van een kunstenaar die leeft en werkt in een omgeving die creativiteit in de weg staat. Het is tekenen als een vorm van rouwen, als troost, als een uitweg zoeken.

ENG – These drawings from the S.M.A.K. collection form part of ‘Letters from Baghdad’, a series which, like a diary, tells the story of the tragedy of the artist’s return to Baghdad. Each work seems permeated with Atta Sabri’s search for identity. He writes down the names of cities he has been to (Los Angeles, London, Erbil and Baghdad, for example) and his forms refer to the art history he is very familiar with, so we can interpret these works as a drawn biography. In these drawings, the problems experienced by a country merge with those of an artist who lives and works in an environment that hinders creativity. This is drawing as a form of grieving, as consolation, looking for a way out.

FR - Ces dessins de la collection du S.M.A.K. font partie de ‘Letters from Baghdad’, une série de dessins qui raconte sous la forme d’un journal la tragédie du retour de l’artiste à Bagdad. Chaque oeuvre semble imprégnée de la quête d’identité d’Atta Sabri. En notant les noms des villes où il est passé (Los Angeles, Londres, Erbil et Bagdad, par exemple) et en se référant de manière formelle à l’histoire de l’art qu’il connaît bien, nous pouvons lire les dessins comme une biographie dessinée. La problématique d’un pays est associée dans ces dessins à celle d’un artiste qui vit et travaille dans un environnement qui entrave la créativité. Dessiner est une forme de deuil, de consolation, de recherche d’une échappatoire.
