The Stack

NL – Vertrekkend vanuit bestaand fotografisch of filmisch materiaal, onderzoekt David Claerbout in zijn video’s de grenzen tussen stilstaande en bewegende beelden. Hij creëert mini-verhalen in een stedelijke setting, waarin thema’s zoals de observerende omgevingsblik en het functioneren van het visuele geheugen een centrale rol spelen. Zo ook in ‘The Stack’, waar een slapende dakloze beschutting zoekt onder de betonnen bruggen van een verkeerswisselaar. Het verglijden van de tijd wordt treffend belichaamd door het langzaam uitdovende zonlicht. Door het slepende, voortschrijdende spel tussen licht en schaduw, worden we ons bewust van de eeuwige beweging van de tijd.

ENG – On the basis of existing photographic or film material, in his videos David Claerbout examines the boundaries between still and moving images. He creates miniature stories in an urban setting, in which such themes as the observant view of the surroundings and the workings of the visual memory play a major part. This is also the case in ‘The Stack’, where a sleeping homeless person has taken shelter under the concrete bridges of a road intersection. The passing of time is tellingly embodied by the slowly fading sunlight. In the lingering, advancing interplay of light and shade, we become aware of the eternal movement of time.

FR – Partant de matériel photographique ou cinématographique existant, David Claerbout explore dans ses vidéos les frontières entre les images fixes et les images animées. Il crée des histoires miniatures dans un environnement urbain autour de thèmes comme le regard circulaire et le fonctionnement de la mémoire visuelle, comme ici dans ‘The Stack’, où un SDF dort sous les ponts en béton d’un échangeur autoroutier. Le glissement du temps est parfaitement incarné par la lumière du jour qui s’estompe. Le jeu lent entre lumière et ombre donne au spectateur la conscience du mouvement éternel du temps.
