NL – Sinds 1973 beschouwt Hamish Fulton zich als een ‘wandelende kunstenaar’. Wandelen ziet hij als een artistieke en intrinsiek existentiële handeling. Daarbij focust hij zich zowel fysiek als mentaal, stap voor stap, op het overschrijden van de grenzen van tijd en ruimte. Een belangrijk element in zijn werk is de gewaarwording van zijn omgeving en van zijn eigen beweging, terwijl hij wordt gedwongen zich aan te passen aan het ritme van de natuur. De fotoreeks ‘World Within a World’ representeert een gebalde indruk van Fultons ervaringen tijdens die eerste wandeling in 1973, een tocht van 47 dagen van Duncansby Head in Schotland tot Land’s End in Cornwall.
ENG – Since 1973 Hamish Fulton has considered himself a ‘walking artist’. He sees walking as an artistic and intrinsically existential action. He focuses both on the physical and the mental, step by step, and on the crossing of the boundaries of time and space. One of the important elements of his work is the perception of his surroundings and his own movements, while being compelled to adapt to the rhythm of nature. His series of photos entitled ‘World Within a World’ represents a concentrated impression of Fulton’s experiences on his first walk in 1973, a 47-day trip from Duncansby Head in Scotland to Land’s End in Cornwall.
FR – Hamish Fulton se considère depuis 1973 comme ‘artiste errant’. La marche est pour lui un acte artistique et intrinsèquement existentiel. Pas après pas, il porte une attention aussi bien physique que mentale au dépassement des frontières du temps et de l’espace. Un élément important de son œuvre est la perception de son environnement et de son propre mouvement tandis qu’il est contraint de s’adapter au rythme de la nature.
