NL – Het oeuvre van Ghekiere problematiseert ons romantische verlangen naar de unieke, herkenbare ‘hand van de meester’. Zo monteerde de schilder zijn penseel soms op een boormachine of – zoals in ‘Zonder Titel’ – zijn doek op een draaitafel om met spuitverf concentrische cirkels in degradé aan te brengen. Door deze werkwijze kreeg het doek een bevreemdende diepte en flirt het schilderij met het driedimensionale. Het tweedimensionale beeldvlak wordt in dit conceptuele schilderij tegelijk ontkend en bevestigd.

ENG – Ghekiere’s oeuvre problematises our romantic longing for the unique, recognisable ‘hand of the master’. Thus the painter sometimes mounted his brush on a drill or – as in ‘Untitled’ – his canvas on a turntable in order to apply concentric circles in a colour gradient with spray paint. This way of working lends an alienating depth to the canvas, whereby the painting flirts with the three-dimensional. In this conceptual painting, the two-dimensional picture plane is both negated and confirmed.

FR - L’oeuvre problématise notre désir romantique de la ‘main du maître’ unique et identifiable. C’est ainsi que le peintre montait parfois son pinceau sur une foreuse ou – comme dans ‘Zonder titel’ – sa toile sur une platine pour appliquer des cercles concentriques en dégradé avec de la peinture au pistolet. Cette méthode donnait une profondeur étrange à la toile et la peinture flirtait avec le tri-dimensionnel. La surface bi-dimensionnelle de l’image est à la fois ignorée et confirmée dans cette peinture conceptuelle.
