'Learning from Artists' met Anthony Huberman

Huberman

S.M.A.K. and Curatorial Studies are honoured to welcome Anthony Huberman as the inaugural speaker in the 2018-19 Curatorial Lecture series on the subject of 'Learning from Artists'.

Anthony Huberman is director and chief curator of the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art, San Francisco, and founding director of The Artist's Institute in New York.

"The Wattis Institute's mission statement is written in the form of a question: 'What and how can we learn from artists today?' While we all learn from artists in countless ways -- whether we are curators, exhibition visitors, or even patrons -- what could it mean for an institution to learn from artists? What might that look like? Many institutions are founded and/or run by artists, and all institutions like to say that they support artists, but it’s something different to say that an institution learns from artists. This lecture introduces what this means for me, for the Wattis Institute, and what it might mean more generally."
