No Title (Stacked Plates)

NL - De kritiekloze aanvaarding van het kleinburgerlijke leven neemt Therrien ook in ‘No Title (Stacked Plates)’ op de korrel. Het werk bestaat uit uitvergrote soep- en eetborden uit epoxy die slordig op elkaar gestapeld zijn. Deze ‘Stacked Plates’ zijn een van de meest voorkomende motieven uit Therriens oeuvre van de jaren ‘90. Door ze uit te vergroten, verleent de kunstenaar aan de stapeling een desoriënterend, zelfs dreigend effect. Dat het design van de borden niets exclusiefs verraadt maar ‘vintage mass production’ is, was voor Therrien van belang. Het zorgt ervoor dat we ons beter kunnen inleven en de kritiek op de universele sleur van ons leven meer ter harte nemen.

ENG - The uncritical acceptance of petty-bourgeois life is also addressed by Therrien in 'No Title (Stacked Plates)'. The work consists of enlarged epoxy soup and dinner plates untidily stacked on top of each other. These 'Stacked Plates' are one of the most common motifs in Therrien's oeuvre of the nineties. By enlarging them, the artist gives the stack a disorientating, even threatening effect. The fact that the design of the plates reveals nothing exclusive but is 'vintage mass production' was important for Therrien. It makes us more able to empathize and take the criticism of the universal grind of our lives more to heart.

FR - Dans ‘No Title (Stacked Plates)’, Therrien s’en prend aussi à l’acceptation dépourvue de critique des petits-bourgeois. L’oeuvre se compose d’assiettes creuses et plates en époxyde, agrandies et négligemment empilées. Ces ‘Stacked Plates’ sont un des motifs les plus fréquents dans l’oeuvre de Therrien dans les années ’90. En les agrandissant, l’artiste confère à cet amoncelement un effet désorientant, voire menaçant. Il importait pour Therrien que le design des assiettes ne trahisse aucune exclusivité, mais soit ‘vintage mass production’. Il veille à ce que nous puissions mieux vivre la situation et que nous soyons davantage attentifs à la critique du train-train quotidien de notre vie.
