Panem et Circenses I

NL – Het werk ‘Panem et circenses I’ bestaat uit een voetbalgoal voorzien van een glas-in-loodraam. Delvoye koppelt wringende werelden van hoge en lage cultuur, van kitsch en kunst en ven goede smaak en wansmaak. Hij wil de grenzen tussen deze werelden in een (kunst)voorwerp opheffen. “Ik vecht tegen het object, ik wil het ridiculiseren…het ontkleden”, zegt hij strijdlustig. In zijn reeks ‘Voetbalgoals’ uit 1990, waartoe ‘Panem et circenses I’ behoort, is deze vernietigingsdrang heel ‘voelbaar’. De doelen zijn, op hun stalen raamwerk na, geheel in glas-in-loodramen uitgevoerd. Je voelt de fragiliteit van de constructie botsen met de kracht van een getrapte bal. Op de ramen staan bakkerstaferelen die rechtstreeks verwijzen naar de titel, Latijn voor ‘Brood en spelen’, en met hun breugeliaanse stijl ook naar de volkse smaak. Dit kunstwerk kan dus enerzijds gelezen worden als een letterlijke omzetting van de betekenis van de Latijnse slogan van Juvenalis – “Geef het volk voedsel en vermaak, dan houdt het zich koest” – maar waarschuwt anderzijds ook voor de broosheid van dit aloude machtsbeginsel.

ENG – The work 'Panem et circenses I' consists of a football goal fitted with a stained-glass window. Delvoye links wringing worlds of high and low culture, of kitsch and art and ven good taste and bad taste. He wants to dissolve the boundaries between these worlds in an (art) object. "I fight against the object, I want to ridicule it...undress it," he says pugnaciously. In his 1990 series 'Football Goals', to which 'Panem et circenses I' belongs, this urge for destruction is very 'palpable'. Except for their steel frames, the goals are entirely stained-glass. You can feel the fragility of the construction colliding with the force of a kicked ball. The windows feature bakery scenes that refer directly to the title, Latin for 'Bread and Games', and with their Breugelian style also to popular taste. This artwork can thus be read on the one hand as a literal transposition of the meaning of Juvenalis' Latin slogan - "Give the people food and entertainment, then they will keep quiet" - but on the other hand it also warns against the fragility of this time-honoured principle of power.

FR – L'œuvre "Panem et circenses I" consiste en un but de football équipé d'un vitrail. Delvoye fait le lien entre les mondes de la haute et de la basse culture, du kitsch et de l'art, du bon et du mauvais goût. Il veut dissoudre les frontières entre ces mondes dans un objet (d'art). "Je me bats contre l'objet, je veux le ridiculiser... le déshabiller", dit-il avec pugnacité. Dans sa série "Football Goals" de 1990, à laquelle appartient "Panem et circenses I", ce besoin de destruction est très "palpable". À l'exception de leur armature en acier, les buts sont entièrement en verre teinté. On peut sentir la fragilité de la construction se heurter à la force d'un ballon frappé. Les fenêtres présentent des scènes de boulangerie qui font directement référence au titre, qui signifie "Pain et jeux" en latin, et au goût populaire grâce à leur style breugélien. Cette œuvre d'art peut donc être lue, d'une part, comme une transposition littérale de la signification du slogan latin de Juvenalis - "Donnez au peuple de la nourriture et du divertissement, alors il se taira" - mais, d'autre part, elle met également en garde contre la fragilité de ce principe de pouvoir consacré par l'usage.
