NL – Als één van de pioniers van het conceptualisme en minimalisme, focust Robert Barry zich op de ruimte tussen objecten, tussen tijd, tussen kunstenaar en kunstkijker en op de ruimte zelf. Hij werkt met een waaier aan soms ontastbare media zoals magnetisme, gedachten, woorden, ultrasone straling en inert gas. Op analoge wijze wordt in het werk ‘Advocate’ een reeks dia’s met verschillende woorden geprojecteerd. De individuele woorden werden gekozen om impressies te suggereren en niet omwille van hun kritische of analytische karakter. Via insinuatie proberen ze associaties op te roepen met de architecturale of psychologische context waarvoor ze bedoeld zijn.

ENG – As one of the pioneers of conceptualism and minimalism, Robert Barry focuses on the space between objects, between time, and between the artist and the viewer, as well as on space itself. He works with a range of sometimes intangible media such as magnetism, thoughts, words, ultrasonic radiation and inert gas. One manifestation of this is the piece ‘Advocate’, in which a series of slides of various words is projected. The individual words were chosen to create impressions, rather than for their critical or analytical nature. They are aimed to try, by insinuation, to conjure up associations with the architectural or psychological context for which they are intended.

FR – Robert Barry, un des pionniers du conceptualisme et du minimalisme, se focalise sur l’espace entre les objets, le temps, l’artiste et le spectateur, et l’espace lui-même. Il travaille avec un éventail de médias parfois intouchables, comme le magnétisme, les pensées, les mots, la radiation ultrasonique et le gaz inerte. De manière analogique, une série de diapositives avec différents mots est projetée dans l’œuvre ‘Advocate’. Les mots individuels sont choisis pour suggérer des impressions et non pas pour leur caractère critique ou analytique. Par l’insinuation, ils tentent d’évoquer des associations par rapport au contexte architectural ou psychologique auquel ils sont destinés.
