Cavoli nella neve

NL – ‘Cavoli nella neve’ (kolen in de sneeuw) is een werk uit de reeks ‘Tappeti-Natura’. Het idee voor de reeks ontstond na een gesprek met een van zijn vrienden over het landschap van de toekomst. Gilardi beeldde zich een omgeving in die, omwille van hygiëne en comfort, met synthetische materialen zou worden gemaakt. Hij begon te experimenteren met schuimrubber, vormvast en zacht tegelijk. Hij sneed er figuren uit die hij vervolgens beschilderde of in een verfbad onderdompelde. Op deze manier maakte hij er realistisch uitziende natuurfragmenten, zoals rivierbeddingen met keien, afgezaagde takken en moestuintjes. Gilardi was ervan overtuigd dat nieuwe technologieën hand in hand konden gaan met de natuur en haar zelfs zouden beschermen. Zijn visie paste helemaal in de optimistische kijk op technologische ontwikkelingen van de jaren ’60.

ENG – ‘Cavoli nella neve’ (cabbages in the snow) is a work from the ‘Tappeti-Natura’ series. The idea for the series came about after a discussion with one of his friends about the landscape of the future. Gilardi imagined an environment in which synthetic materials would be used for hygiene and comfort reasons. He began to experiment with foam rubber, both moulded and soft. He cut shapes out of the material, which he subsequently painted or dipped in a paint bath. In this way, he made realistic-looking fragments of the natural world, such as riverbeds with stones, sawn-off branches and miniature vegetable patches. Gilardi was convinced that new technologies could go hand in hand with nature and might even afford it protection. His vision was perfectly aligned to the optimistic view of technological developments prevalent in the 1960s.

FR – ‘Cavoli nella neve’ (choux dans la neige) est une œuvre qui fait partie de la série ‘Tappeti-Natura’. Une conversation de l’artiste avec un de ses amis sur le paysage de l’avenir fit germer l’idée de cette série. Gilardi imagina un environnement qui serait fait de matériaux synthétiques pour des raisons d’hygiène et de confort. Il commença à mener des expériences avec du caoutchouc mousse, à la fois indéformable et doux. Il y découpait des personnages qu’il peignait ensuite ou plongeait dans un bain de peinture. C’est ainsi qu’il créa des fragments naturels qui présentaient un aspect réaliste, tels des lits de rivières recouverts de cailloux, des branches sciées et de petits potagers. Gilardi était persuadé que les nouvelles technologies pouvaient être intégrées dans la nature et qu’elles pourraient même la protéger. Sa vision cadrait parfaitement avec la perception optimiste sur les développements technologiques des années ’60.
