Fort Patti II

NL – Met ‘Fort Patti II’ presenteert Sophie Nys een werk dat trouw is aan haar speelse artistieke praktijk. De kunstenaar ging uit van een foto uit 1915 die ze vond kort na de Occupy-protesten van 2011 in New York. De foto werd genomen tijdens de constructie van metrostation Wall Street en toont een oude, blootgelegde waterleiding, alsof ze door een archeoloog zou zijn gedocumenteerd. De erop geïnspireerde installatie omvat een keramische buis die is gemonteerd op twee Emeco Navy stoelen, tijdens WOII ontwikkeld voor de Amerikaanse marine. Op de buis emailleerde Nys de blauwe, droevige ogen van Walt Disney’s Dumbo. ‘Fort Patti II’ verwijst niet alleen naar het ontbreken van een archeologische cultuur in de Verenigde Staten, maar ook naar het Amerikaanse imperialisme dat door kapitalistische en militaristische structuren wordt ondersteund.

ENG – With ‘Fort Patti II’ Sophie Nys presents a work that is faithful to her playful artistic practice. The artist appropriated a photograph from 1915, which she found shortly after the ‘Occupy’ protests in New York in 2011. The picture was taken during the construction of the Wall Street subway station and shows an old, exposed water pipe, as if it had been documented by an archaeologist. The installation that this inspired features a ceramic tube mounted on two Emeco Navy chairs, developed during WWII by the U.S. Navy. On the tube, Nys has enamelled the sad, blue eyes of Walt Disney’s Dumbo. ‘Fort Patti II’ not only refers to the lack of an archaeological culture in the United States, but also to American imperialism supported by capitalist and militaristic structures.

FR - Avec ‘Fort Patti II’, Sophie Nys présente une oeuvre fidèle à sa pratique artistique ludique. L’artiste s’est inspirée d’une photo de 1915 qu’elle trouva peu après les actions de protestation Occupy de 2011 à New York. La photo, prise au cours de la construction de la station de métro Wall Street, montre un ancien conduit d’eau mis à nu, comme s’il avait été découvert par un archéologue. L’installation qui s’en inspire comporte un tuyau en céramique monté sur deux chaises Emeco Navy, créées par la marine américaine pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale. Nys a réalisé les tristes yeux bleus de Dumbo de Walt Disney en émail sur le tuyau. ‘Fort Patti II’ n’évoque pas uniquement l’absence de culture archéologique aux Etats-Unis, mais également l’impérialisme américain soutenu par des structures capitalistes et militaristes.
