Hello, are we in the show? (drawings animatic)

NL - ‘Hello, Are We In the Show?’ bestaat uit 172 originele tekeningen uit een reeks van 344. Ze vormen het storyboard voor de gelijknamige animatiefilm. De selectie tekeningen werd gemonteerd tot een lange passage in de film. In ‘Hello, Are We In the Show?’ schetsen Denicolai & Provoost een beeld van het dagelijkse leven in het Zoniënwoud bij Brussel. Dieren, planten, bomen, mensen en de nabijgelegen industrie maken zonder onderscheid deel hiervan uit. Op de tekeningen zie je naast drijvende zwanen dan ook lawaaierige passagiersvliegtuigen. Met de film doorbreekt het duo ons verwachtingspatroon: hij heeft niet het lieflijke, onschuldige karakter van een traditionele animatiefilm, maar stelt de manier waarop we omgaan met de natuur aan de kaak. Omdat het duo kritiek levert via een medium dat niet verondersteld wordt kritisch te zijn, komt de commentaar extra hard aan. S.M.A.K. is co-producer van dit project.

ENG - ‘Hello, Are We In the Show?’ consists of 172 original drawings from a series of 344. They make up a storyboard for the animated film of the same title. This selection of drawings was edited together to form a long passage in the film. In ‘Hello, Are We In the Show?’, Denicolai & Provoost sketch a portrait of everyday life in the Sonian Forest near Brussels. Animals, plants, trees, people and the nearby industry are all part of it, without distinction. So in these drawings you see not only floating swans, but also noisy passenger jets. In this film the duo shatters our expectations: it doesn’t have the charming and innocent characteristics of a traditional animated film, but denounces the way we deal with nature. Because it is couched in a medium that is not expected to be critical, this criticism strikes harder. S.M.A.K. is the co-producer of this project.

FR - ‘Hello, Are We In the Show?’ se compose de 172 dessins originaux d’une série de 344. Ils constituent le scénario d’un film d’animation du même nom. La sélection de dessins a été montée en un long passage dans le film. Dans ‘Hello, Are We In the Show?’, Denicolai & Provoost ébauchent une image de la vie quotidienne en Forêt de Soignes près de Bruxelles. Les animaux, les plantes, les arbres, les hommes et l’industrie toute proche en font partie sans distinction. Sur les dessins, on voit donc aussi à côté de cygnes qui flottent des avions bruyants. Avec le film, le duo rompt nos prévisions: il n’a pas le caractère charmant et innocent d’un film d’animation traditionnel, mais il dénonce la manière dont nous nous comportons avec la nature. Parce que le duo émet une critique en se servant d’un média qui n’est pas censé être critique, le commentaire est perçu de manière très dure. Le S.M.A.K. co-produit ce projet.
