NL - De ‘Idiosyncratische Machine’ (IM) is een teken- en knipmachine, ontwikkeld sinds 2011, die vormen genereert volgens een door Kristof Van Gestel opgelegde reeks instructies. Daarbij spelen niet alleen de instructies een rol maar ook individuele keuzes, toeval en dialoog. Cruciaal is dat de ‘IM’ als kunstwerk eerder een proces toont dan een product. Bovendien valt de ‘machine’ onder collectief auteurschap. De vormen die eruit ontstaan worden door Van Gestel immers in samenwerking met zijn publiek gecreëerd. De ‘IM’ functioneert niet enkel als ‘machine’ of methode. Ze verschijnt als een totaalinstallatie die het verloop van het werkproces en de relatie tussen de kunstenaar, deelnemers en kijkers materialiseert. Met artistieke uitwerkingen van het restmateriaal van de ‘IM’ eigent Van Gestel zich de ‘machine’ en haar resultaten opnieuw toe, iets waartoe hij ook andere kunstenaars en deelnemers uitnodigt. Dit onderstreept het meerduidige en evolutieve karakter van de ‘IM’ als ervaring, vormentaal, methode, concept, instructie en participatie- en reflectieproces.

ENG - The ‘Idiosyncratic Machine’ (IM) is a drawing and cutting machine that since 2011 has been used to generate forms in accordance with a series of instructions dictated by Kristof Van Gestel. Throughout the process, it is not only the instructions that count, but also individual choices, chance and dialogue. Crucial is that, as an artwork, the ‘IM’ shows a process rather than a product. Moreover, the ‘machine’ comes under collective authorship. After all, Van Gestel creates the forms it engenders in collaboration with his audience. This room is where the residual material from the workshops accumulates. The ‘IM’ does not function solely as a ‘machine’ or method. It manifests itself as an all-embracing installation that gives material form to the course of the working process and the relationship between the artist, participants and viewers. With artistic elaborations of the residual material from the ‘IM’, Van Gestel again appropriates the ‘machine’ and its results, something he also invites other artists and participants to do. This emphasises the ambiguous and evolving nature of the ‘IM’ as an experience, formal language, method, concept, instruction and process of participation and reflection.

FR - La ‘Machine Idiosyncratique’ (MI) est une machine à dessiner et à découper, développée depuis 2011, qui génère des formes selon une série d’instructions imposées par Kristof Van Gestel. Non seulement les instructions jouent un rôle, mais aussi des choix individuels, le hasard et le dialogue. Il est crucial que la ‘MI’ en tant qu’œuvre d’art montre plutôt un processus qu’un produit. En outre, la ‘machine’ relève d’un droit d’auteur collectif. Les formes qui en émanent sont en effet créées par Van Gestel en collaboration avec son public. Le matériel des ateliers s’entasse dans cet espace. La ‘MI’ fonctionne non seulement comme ‘machine’ ou méthode. Elle apparaît comme une installation totale qui matérialise le déroulement du processus de création et la relation entre l’artiste, les participants et les spectateurs. Avec des développements artistiques du matériel résiduel de la ‘MI’, Van Gestel s’approprie à nouveau la ‘machine’ et ses résultats, ce à quoi il invite aussi d’autres artistes et participants.
