NL – Deze installatie komt voort uit Arunanondchai’s onderzoek rond de snelst groeiende maar beruchte Thaise boeddhistische strekking Dhammakaya. De beweging cultiveert een specifieke esthetiek: voor elke tempelbezoeker geldt de strikte dresscode ‘wit’ en Dhammakaya’s tempelarchitectuur doet denken aan ruimteschepen als ‘Death Star’ uit ‘Star Wars’. De beschuldiging dat de organisatie corrupt zou zijn trok veel media-aandacht. Ter ontwikkeling van deze installatie zette Arunanondchai een fictieve samenwerking op met een productmerk verwant aan Dhammakaya. Het resultaat houdt het midden tussen een boeddhistische tempel en een futuristische luxewinkel. Religie en consumptie verbinden er zich tot een nieuw ritueel waarin reiniging, verlossing en redding centraal staan.
ENG – This installation ensues from Arunanondchai’s study of Dhammakaya, Thailand’s fastest growing, but notorious Buddhist movement. It cultivates a specific aesthetic: every visitor to a temple is subject to a strict dress code – ‘white’ – and the architecture of its temples is reminiscent of such spaceships as ‘Death Star’ in Star Wars. The accusation of corruption made against the movement has drawn abundant media attention. To develop this installation, the artist established an imaginary partnership with a brand name related to Dhammakaya. The result is midway between a Buddhist temple and a futuristic luxury shop where religion and consumption commit themselves to a new ritual centred on cleansing, redemption and salvation.
FR - Cette installation est le résultat de la recherche d’Arunanondchai sur la tendance bouddhiste thaïlandaise Dhammakaya qui se répand le plus rapidement, mais de sinistre réputation. Le mouvement cultive une esthétique spécifique: chaque visiteur du temple doit respecter le strict code vestimentaire du ‘blanc’ et l’architecture du temple de Dhammakaya fait penser à des engins spatiaux comme ‘Death Star’ dans ‘Star Wars’. L’accusation selon laquelle l’organisation serait corrompue a suscité une vive attention dans les médias. Pour développer cette installation, Arunanondchai élabora une collaboration fictive avec une marque de produits apparentée à Dhammakaya. Le résultat marque le milieu entre un temple bouddhiste et un magasin de luxe futuriste. La religion et la consommation s’y réunissent en un nouveau rituel où la purification, la délivrance et le salut occupent une position centrale.
