L’histoire est simple et édifiante

NL - De installatie ‘L’histoire est simple et édifiante’ (De geschiedenis is eenvoudig en opbouwend) (2014-’15) kwam tot stand tijdens Sven Augustijnens onderzoek naar de Belgische vuurwapenfabrikant Fabrique Nationale de Herstal, die wereldwijde roem verwierf door de productie van de FAL (Fusil Automatique Léger), een van de meest verkochte lichte automatische geweren. Geprofileerd als “the right arm of the free world” werd de FAL tijdens de Koude Oorlog voornamelijk ingezet door NAVO-leden en anticommunistische bondgenoten. Maar de FAL verscheen ook aan de andere kant van het ideologische spectrum. De door Augustijnen zorgvuldig geselecteerde pagina’s uit het Franse tijdschrift ‘Paris Match’, dat reportages uitbracht onder het motto “het gewicht van woorden, de schok van foto’s”, getuigen van deze paradox. Deze installatie benadrukt de verwevenheid van beeld, journalistiek en geschiedschrijving.

ENG - The installation ‘L’histoire est simple et édifiante’ (History is simple and edifying) (2014-15) arose during Sven Augustijnen’s research into the Belgium-based firearm manufacturer Fabrique Nationale de Herstal, which achieved global notoriety due to its production of the FAL (Fusil Automatique Léger), one of the world’s bestselling light automatic rifles. Profiled as “the right arm of the free world” during the Cold War, the FAL was chiefly used by NATO members and anti-communist allies. But the FAL has also appeared on the other side of the ideological spectrum. The by Augustijnen carefully selected pages from the French magazine ‘Paris Match’, that published reportages under the motto “the weight of words, the shock of photos”, attest to this paradox. This installation underlines the interconnectedness of images, journalism and historiography.

FR - L’installation ‘L’histoire est simple et édifiante’ (2014-’15) vit le jour au cours des recherches de Sven Augustijnen sur le fabricant belge d’armes à feu, la Fabrique Nationale de Herstal, qui acquit une réputation mondiale par la production du FAL (Fusil Automatique Léger), un des fusils de ce type les plus vendus. Défini comme “the right arm of the free world”, le FAL a servi principalement aux membres de l’OTAN et aux alliés anticommunistes pendant la Guerre Froide. Mais le FAL fit également son apparition de l’autre côté du spectre idéologique. Les pages soigneusement sélectionnées par Augustijnen dans l’illustré français ‘Paris Match’, qui proposait des reportages sous le slogan “le poids des mots, le choc des photos”, témoignent de ce paradoxe.
