Plot Point

NL – Voor ‘Plot Point’ trok Provost met een verborgen camera vijf avonden lang naar Times Square in New York. Hij draaide er documentaire beelden van toeristen, auto’s, politieagenten en bewakers, zwaailichten, passanten en vreemde figuren, die hij monteerde met bijzondere aandacht voor esthetiek en suspense tot een video met een bezwerende spanningsboog. De beelden worden gedragen door dramatische filmmuziek en hebben haast Hollywoodiaanse allures. Maar hoewel Provost de vuistregels voor filmische fictie toepaste, leverde dit geen klassieke film op. ‘Plot Point’ volgt wel de klassieke verhaalopbouw van plaatsbepaling, voorstelling van de personages, het uitrollen van een ‘probleem’ en de uiteindelijke ‘oplossing’ of ‘afwikkeling’ ervan, maar dan in een sterk vertraagd ritme en zonder plot. Het werk bestaat louter uit paranoïde sfeerschepping en kan ook worden gelezen als een ironische commentaar op de Amerikaanse hysterie na 9/11.

ENG – For ‘Plot Point’, Provost spent five evenings on Times Square in New York with a hidden camera. He shot documentary footage of tourists, cars, policemen and security guards, flashing lights, passers-by and strange characters, all of which he edited together, paying particular attention to aesthetics and suspense, to create a video with a haunting tension. The images are underpinned by dramatic film music and almost have a Hollywood air about them. But although Provost applied the rules of thumb for film fiction, this did not produce a traditional film. ‘Plot Point’ does however keep to the standard narrative composition of establishing location, introducing the characters, unfolding a ‘problem’ and its ultimate ‘solution’ or ‘winding up’, but it takes place at a substantially reduced tempo and without a plot. The work consists merely of the creation of a paranoid atmosphere and can also be interpreted as an ironic comment on American hysteria post 9/11.

FR - Pour ‘Plot Point’, Provost est allé sur Times Square à New York avec une caméra cachée pendant cinq soirées. Il y a tourné des images documentaires de touristes, de voitures, de policiers et de gardes, de lumières clignotantes, de passants et de figures étranges, qu'il a montées avec une attention particulière pour l'esthétique et le suspense en une vidéo à la tension évocatrice. Les images sont portées par de la musique de film dramatique et ont des allures presque hollywoodiennes. Mais bien que Provost ait appliqué les règles empiriques pour la fiction cinématographique, cela n'a pas donné un film classique. ‘Plot Point’ suit bien la structure narrative classique, avec une localisation, la présentation des personnages, le déploiement d'un « problème » et sa « solution » ou son « achèvement » au bout du compte, mais à un rythme fortement ralenti et sans intrigue (« plot »). L’œuvre est constituée simplement par une atmosphère paranoïaque et peut également être lue comme un commentaire ironique sur l'hystérie américaine après le 11 septembre.
