Reaktor Gent

NL - Betonblokken liggen verspreid op de grond. In elk blok zit een microfoon die verbonden is met een mengpaneel en een versterker waarop een luidspreker is aangesloten. De micro’s vangen omgevingsgeluiden op: stemmen, voetstappen, geluiden van kunstwerken in de buurt. Met wat vertraging en licht vervormd stuurt Michael Sailstorfers ‘Reaktor Gent’ deze geluiden opnieuw de ruimte in, om vervolgens ook deze klanken die de installatie zelf heeft uitgestuurd op te pikken, op hun beurt te verwerken en weer uit te sturen. ‘Reaktor Gent’ produceert een eindeloze loop van geluiden die uitmondt in een monotone klank die de hele ruimte overspoelt. Het werk is een portret van zijn omgeving en gebruikt geluid als sculpturaal materiaal. De kunstenaar ontdekte dit geluidssysteem per toeval in zijn atelier. Hij stopte een microfoon in een restje beton, gewoon omdat hij dat een interessant beeld vond. Maanden later vond hij het verharde blok beton terug. Bij wijze van experiment sloot hij de microfoon aan op een versterker. Zo merkte hij dat dit alternatieve geluidssysteem de klank van zijn voetstappen omzette in een diepe, monotone klank. Sinds deze ontdekking bouwde Sailstorfer verschillende ‘Reaktoren’ in de meest uiteenlopende vormen en materialen. ‘Reaktor Gent’ maakte hij voor zijn overzichtstentoonstelling ‘Raum und Zeit’ in S.M.A.K. in 2011.

ENG - Concrete blocks lie scattered about the floor. In each one is a microphone connected to a sound mixer and an amplifier with loudspeaker attached. The micros capture the ambient sounds: voices, footsteps, sounds made by adjacent artworks. Michael Sailstorfer’s ‘Reaktor Gent’ plays these sounds, slightly delayed and distorted, and then also recaptures them, and once again alters and replays them. ‘Reaktor Gent’ results in an endless loop of sound which becomes a monotonous noise that washes over the whole room. This work is a portrait of its surroundings and uses sound as its sculptural material. The artist discovered this sound system by chance while at work in his studio. He inserted a microphone into a piece of residual concrete simply because he found it an interesting image. Months later he found the hardened block of concrete again. As an experiment he connected the microphone to an amplifier. In this way he noticed that this alternative sound system converted the sound of his footsteps into a deep, monotonous sound. Since making this discovery, Sailstorfer has built several ‘Reaktoren’ in the most varied shapes and materials. He made ‘Reaktor Gent’ for ‘Raum und Zeit’, his retrospective at S.M.A.K. in 2011.

FR - Des blocs de béton sont éparpillés sur le sol. Chaque bloc contient un microphone relié à un panneau de mixage et un amplificateur auquel est raccordé un haut-parleur. Les micros captent des bruits d’ambiance: des voix, des bruits de pas, des bruits d’œuvres d’art dans les environs. Le ‘Reaktor Gent’ de Michael Sailstorfer renvoie ces sons dans l’espace avec un certain décalage et légèrement déformés, pour ensuite capter, transformer et renvoyer à leur tour aussi ces sons que l’installation elle-même a envoyés. ‘Reaktor Gent’ provoque un développement infini de bruits qui évolue vers un son monotone qui submerge tout l’espace. L’œuvre est un portrait de son environnement et il se sert du bruit comme matériel sculptural. C’est par hasard que l’artiste a découvert ce système sonore dans son atelier. Il a dissimulé un microphone dans un restant de béton, simplement parce qu’il trouvait que c’était une idée intéressante. Des mois plus tard, il a retrouvé le bloc de béton durci. A titre d’expérience, il a raccordé le microphone à un amplificateur. C’est ainsi qu’il a constaté que ce système sonore alternatif transformait le bruit de ses pas en un son profond et monotone. Depuis cette découverte, Sailsforter a construit plusieurs ‘Reaktoren’ dans les formes et les matériaux les plus divers. Il a réalisé ‘Reaktor Gent’ pour sa rétrospective ‘Raum und Zeit’ au S.M.A.K. en 2011.
