The Black Box Penny Arcade Peep Show

NL - ‘The Black Box Penny Arcade Peep Show’ maakt deel uit van Bibby’s reeks ‘The Drumhead’, waarin hij het onderzoek in beeld bracht in functie van de gelijknamige roman die hij in 2014 zou schrijven. Op de wandsculptuur lees je een quote van de homofobe, rechtse blogger die in 2013 zelfmoord pleegde in de Parijse Notre-Dame-kathedraal als protest tegen het homohuwelijk in Frankrijk. Bibby gebruikte de tekst als vertrekpunt voor zijn roman. Op de achterzijde van het doek zijn woorden geschikt en nauwelijks herkenbare foto’s van o.a. politica Angela Merkel, popster Freddy Mercury en het monster van Frankenstein. Het doek belicht – ook letterlijk – het ontstaansproces van Bibby’s roman, meer bepaald de ontwikkeling van de personages. Het werk was te zien op de Biënnale van Lyon in 2013. De barkruk kwam er na contact met een bewoner van de stad. Binnen het randprogramma van de Biënnale werd elke deelnemende kunstenaar uitgenodigd om in een huis in Lyon een kunstwerk te plaatsen. Het leek Bibby interessanter om iets van een bewoner naar het museum te brengen. Farida Aouaiti stelde zich voor Bibby’s idee open. Haar engagement mondde uit in de permanente integratie van haar barkruk in het kunstwerk.

ENG - ‘The Black Box Penny Arcade Peep Show’ is part of Bibby’s series The Drumhead, in which he visualised the research done for the novel of the same name that he was intending to write in 2014. On the wall-sculpture you can read a quote from the right-wing homophobic blogger who committed suicide in the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris in 2013, in protest at the legalisation of gay marriage in France. Bibby used the text as a starting point for his novel. The back of the canvas contains an arrangement of words and barely recognisable photos of people including the politician Angela Merkel, the pop star Freddy Mercury and Frankenstein’s monster. The canvas sheds light (literally and figuratively) on the genesis of Bibby’s novel, more specifically on the development of the characters. The work was shown at the Lyon Biennale in 2013. The bar stool was added following an encounter with a resident of the city. As part of the Biennale’s parallel programme, each artist taking part was invited to place a work of art in a house in Lyon. Bibby thought it would be more interesting to take something belonging to a resident to the museum. Farida Aouaiti was open to this idea. Her involvement led to the permanent integration of her bar stool into the artwork.

Sur la sculpture murale, on peut lire une citation du bloggeur homophobe de droite qui s’est suicidé en 2013 dans la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris pour protester contre le mariage homosexuel en France. Bibby a pris le texte comme point de départ de son roman. Au dos de la toile sont disposés des mots et des photos à peine reconnaissables, e.a. de la femme politique Angela Merkel, de la popstar Freddy Mercury et du monstre Frankenstein. La toile éclaire – aussi littéralement – le processus de création du roman de Bibby, plus particulièrement le développement des personnages. L’œuvre était visible à la Biennale de Lyon en 2013. Le tabouret de bar a été placé à la suite d’un contact avec un habitant de la ville. Dans le cadre du programme en marge de la Biennale, chaque artiste participant a été invité à placer une œuvre d’art dans une maison de Lyon. Il semblait plus intéressant pour Bibby d’apporter au musée quelque chose appartenant à un habitant. Farida Aouaiti s’est montrée ouverte à l’idée de Bibby. Son engagement a conduit à l’intégration permanente de son tabouret de bar dans l’œuvre d’art.
