NL – In zijn werk integreert Smith vaak kledij of andere industrieel vervaardigde massaproducten die in verband kunnen worden gebracht met elementaire menselijke behoeftes zoals comfort, beschutting en bescherming. Met ‘Untitled’, een zwarte sweater belicht met een rode laserstraal, verwijst Smith op een rudimentaire manier naar de voormalige functie van de sweater. De trui staat daarnaast ook voor een leeg omhulsel of een spoor van een menselijk lichaam, en dit binnen een wereld waartoe het niet meer lijkt te behoren.

ENG – In his work, Smith often integrates clothing or other industrially manufactured mass products that can be associated with basic human needs such as comfort, shelter and protection. With ‘Untitled’, a black sweater illuminated with a red laser beam, Smith refers in a rudimentary way to the previous function of the sweater. The sweater also stands for an empty shell or a trace of a human body, and this within a world to which it no longer seems to belong.

FR - Smith intègre souvent des vêtements ou d’autres produits de masse fabriqués industriellement qui peuvent être reliés à des besoins humains élémentaires, comme le confort, l’abri et la protection. Avec ‘Untitled’, un sweater noir éclairé d’un rayon laser rouge, Smith renvoie de façon rudimentaire à l’ancienne fonction du sweater. De plus, le pull symbolise un enveloppement vide ou la trace d’un corps humain, et ce dans un monde auquel il ne semble plus appartenir.
