Untitled (Sculpture)

NL – Barry Flanagan ontwikkelt kunst vanuit wat hij concreet ervaart en houdt zich ver van theorieën en esthetisch-ideologische kwesties. Intuïtie bepaalt sterk zijn werk. De visuele eigenschappen van een materiaal bezitten, volgens hem, op zich voldoende kracht om zonder extra ideeën een interessant beeld te kunnen vormen. Elk materiaal heeft sculpturale capaciteiten. Het is aan de kunstenaar om ze voor zijn publiek zichtbaar te maken. Flanagan vertrekt vaak van elementaire vormen. Voor ‘Untitled (Sculpture)’ werden een spiraal en een driehoek in een monumentale staalplaat van drie op zeven meter gesneden en vervolgens uit de plaat getrokken. Met deze sculptuur verkent Flanagan de spanningsvelden tussen twee- en driedimensionaliteit, tussen stabiel en instabiel, en tussen hard en zacht. Uit een plat stuk staal werd een ruimtelijk beeld ontwikkeld. De plaat kan zelfstandig rechtop staan, wat voor een plat vlak normaal gezien onmogelijk is. De kunstenaar relativeerde de stugheid van metaal door in de plaat te ‘knippen’ en ze te ‘vouwen’ als een blad papier. ‘Untitled (Sculpture)’ werd gerealiseerd in nauwe samenwerking met de Gentse staalfabriek Sidmar ter gelegenheid van Jan Hoets ‘Kunst in Europa na ‘68’. Aanvankelijk werd de sculptuur geïnstalleerd op het Sint-Pietersplein, voor de ingang van de abdij.

ENG – Barry Flanagan generated art out of his actual experiences and kept well away from theories and aesthetic-ideological issues. It is above all intuition that guides his work. According to him, the visual qualities of a material have sufficient strength in themselves to be able to form an interesting image without any additional ideas. Every material has sculptural capacities. It is up to the artist to make them visible to his public. Flanagan often starts out from elementary forms. For ‘Untitled (Sculpture)’ he cut a spiral and a triangle in a monumental sheet of steel 3 metres by 7 metres and then pulled them outwards. In this piece Flanagan explores the tension between two- and three-dimensionality, between stable and unstable, and between hard and soft. A spatial image was generated out of a flat piece of steel. The sheet can stand up on its own, which is normally impossible for a flat plane. The artist puts the rigidity of metal into perspective by cutting and folding it like a sheet of paper. ‘Untitled (Sculpture)’ was created in close cooperation with the Sidmar steel factory in Ghent for Jan Hoet’s exhibition ‘Art in Europe after ‘68’. The work was initially installed in front of the entrance to the abbey on St Peter’s Square.

FR – Barry Flanagan développe de l’art à partir de son expérience concrète et reste à l’écart des théories et des questions esthético-idéologiques. Son œuvre est fortement déterminée par l’intuition. Les caractéristiques visuelles d’un matériau possèdent, selon lui, suffisamment de force en elles pour pouvoir former une image intéressante sans idées supplémentaires. Chaque matériau possède des capacités sculpturales. Il incombe à l’artiste de les rendre visibles pour son public. Flanagan prend souvent des formes élémentaires comme point de départ. Pour ‘Untitled (Sculpture)’, une spirale et un triangle ont été coupés dans une plaque en acier monumentale de trois mètres sur sept et puis sortis de la plaque. Avec cette sculpture, Flanagan explore les champs de tension entre la bi- et la tridimensionnalité, entre stable et instable, et entre dur et mou. À partir d’une plaque en acier, une image a été développée dans l’espace. La plaque peut tenir droite toute seule, ce qui est normalement impossible pour une surface plane. L’artiste relativise la force du métal en ‘coupant’ dans la plaque et en la ‘pliant’ comme une feuille de papier. ‘Untitled (Sculpture)’ a été réalisé en coopération étroite avec l’usine sidérurgique gantoise Sidmar à l’occasion de l’exposition ‘L’art en Europe après ‘68’ de Jan Hoet. Initialement, la sculpture a été installée sur la Sint-Pietersplein, devant l’entrée de l’abbaye.
