NL - Philip Mettens (°1977, Genk) interdisciplinaire praktijk omvat zowel schilderkunst, beeldhouwkunst, architecturale installaties als collages. Zijn werken zijn moeilijk te categoriseren, maar zijn meteen herkenbaar door het beperkte visuele vocabulaire van geometrische figuren dat de kunstenaar hanteert en voortdurend herconfigureert. De rode draad doorheen Mettens diverse oeuvre is ongetwijfeld architectuur. Hij creëert zowel grootschalige in situ installaties die tegemoetkomen aan reële behoeftes, zoals een restaurant, als kleinschalige, sculpturale collages met technisch tekenpapier die het grondplan van grootsteden evoceren.
CINEMA is een mobiele en modulaire structuur, speciaal ontworpen om videowerken van andere kunstenaars te presenteren. De selectie van de films laat de kunstenaar over aan de organiserende instelling. Vormelijk doet de aluminium constructie denken aan historische fotocamera’s met hun kenmerkende uitschuifbare, accordeonachtige mechanisme. Aan de ene zijde functioneert de transportkist van dit werk als projectiewand. De andere zijde is afgesloten met een sculpturaal achthoekig reliëf, omgeven door vier driehoekige verlichtingselementen die de omliggende ruimte diffuus verlichten. Het lijkt bijna alsof de gehele structuur op zichzelf werkt als een projector. De toeschouwer heeft de keuze om de cinema te betreden of eromheen te wandelen; CINEMA
is tegelijk sculptuur en architectuur. In tegenstelling tot de gebruikelijke black box van een bioscoopzaal is CINEMA een transparante structuur die opgaat in de omliggende architecturale ruimte. De films zijn zelfs te bekijken zonder dat de toeschouwer plaatsneemt in het werk.
FR - La pratique interdisciplinaire de Philippe Metten englobe la peinture, la sculpture, les installations architecturales et les collages. Ses œuvres sont difficilement classables, mais immédiatement identifiables en raison du vocabulaire visuel limité à quelques figures géométriques que l’artiste emploie et ne cesse de reconfigurer. Le fil rouge dans les œuvres très variées de Metten est incontestablement l’architecture. Il crée aussi bien des installations in situ de grande taille qui répondent à des besoins réels – comme un restaurant par exemple – que des collages sculpturaux de petite échelle, réalisés avec du papier à dessin technique, qui évoquent le plan de certaines mégapoles.
CINEMA est une structure mobile et modulaire spécialement conçue pour y présenter les vidéos d’autres artistes. Metten laisse à l’institution organisatrice le soin de sélectionner les films. Sur le plan formel, la structure en aluminium fait penser aux vieux appareils photo avec leur mécanisme caractéristique en accordéon. D’un côté, la caisse de transport de l’œuvre sert de paroi de projection. L’autre côté se termine par un relief sculptural octogonal entouré de quatre dispositifs d’éclairage triangulaires qui éclairent de manière diffuse l’espace environnant. On dirait presque que la structure entière fonctionne elle-même comme un projecteur. Le spectateur peut faire le choix d’entrer dans le cinéma ou de se promener autour de lui : CINEMA est à la fois sculpture et architecture. Contrairement à la black box habituelle d’une salle de cinéma, CINEMA est une structure transparente qui se fond dans l’espace architectural environnant. Les films peuvent même être regardés sans que le spectateur prenne place dans l’œuvre.
ENG - Philip Metten’s (b. 1977, Genk) interdisciplinary practice includes painting, sculpture, architectural installations and collages. His works are difficult to categorise, but are instantly recognisable through the limited visual vocabulary of geometric figures the artist employs and constantly reconfigures. The common thread running through Metten’s diverse oeuvre is undoubtedly architecture. He creates both large-scale, site-specific installations that respond to real needs, such as a restaurant, and small-scale, sculptural collages with technical drawing paper that evoke the ground plans of big cities.
CINEMA is a mobile and modular structure specifically designed to present video works by other artists. Metten leaves the selection of films to the organising institution. Formally, the aluminium structure is reminiscent of historic still cameras with their distinctive retractable, accordion-like mechanism. On one side, the work’s shipping crate functions as a projection wall. The other side is enclosed with a sculptural octagonal relief surrounded by four triangular lighting elements that diffusely illuminate the surrounding space. It almost seems as if the entire structure operates independently, as a projector. The viewer has the option of entering the cinema or walking around it; CINEMA is simultaneously sculpture and architecture. Unlike the standard black box of a cinema auditorium, Metten’s work is a transparent structure that blends into the surrounding architectural space. The films can even be watched without the viewer taking a seat in the work.
