NL - Het Belgische kunstenaarscollectief HAP werd in 1999 opgericht door Jens De Schutter (°1979), Piet Mertens (°1978) en Wim Waelput (°1979). In tegenstelling tot vele andere collectieven, die zich doorgaans verenigen rond een bepaald gezamenlijk artistiek statement of een inhoudelijke ideologie, hanteert HAP veeleer een soort van zelfkritische jolige jongensmentaliteit die ingezet wordt om de meest wilde ideeën op hun haalbaarheid te toetsen.
De objecten, sculpturen en installaties van het collectief ogen bedrieglijk eenvoudig en zijn vervaardigd uit arme, dagelijkse gebruiksmaterialen als karton, plastic, hout en dergelijke meer. HAP schenkt hierbij meestal meer aandacht aan het voorafgaande arbeidsintensieve concipiërings- en maakproces dan aan het uiteindelijke eindresultaat. Het werk Curver-bak uit 2008 is hiervan een goed voorbeeld. Het werk is een schaal 1:1 versie van een typische huishoudelijke verhuisdoos, maar dan vervaardigd in karton in plaats van het normaal gebruikte plastic. Hoewel het object banaal oogt, is de voorafgaande ontwerp- en uitvoeringsfase dat allesbehalve. Hiermee speelt HAP op een subtiele, humoristische manier met de grenzen tussen (gebruiks)object en sculptuur, proces en resultaat, en tussen banaliteit en kunst.
FR - Le collectif d’artistes belges HAP a été fondé en 1999 par Jens De Schutter (°1979), Piet Mertens (°1978) et Wim Waelput (°1979). Contrairement à beaucoup d’autres collectifs qui se forment habituellement autour d’un statement artistique commun ou d’une idéologie déterminée, HAP adopte plutôt une sorte de mentalité autocritique de gais lurons qui s’emploient à tester la faisabilité des idées les plus folles.
Les objets, sculptures et installations du collectif ont l’air faussement simples et sont faits de pauvres matériaux d’usage courant tels que du carton, du plastique, du bois, etcetera. HAP prête en général davantage attention au processus préalable de conception et de fabrication, qui demande beaucoup de travail, qu’au résultat final. Curver-bak de 2008 en est un bel exemple. L’œuvre est une version à l’échelle 1:1 d’une caisse de déménagement typique, mais fabriquée en carton en lieu et place du plastique normalement utilisé. Malgré l’apparence banale de l’objet, la phase préalable de conception et d’exécution de celui-ci a été tout sauf banale. HAP se joue ainsi subtilement et avec humour des limites entre objet (usuel) et sculpture, processus et résultat, banalité et art.

Unlike many other collectives, which usually unite around a common artistic statement or substantive ideology, HAP adopts a kind of self-critical mentality – both exuberant and unruly – and puts the wildest ideas to the test.
The collective’s objects, sculptures and installations often have a deceptively simple appearance. Furthermore, they are often made of poor and utilitarian materials such as cardboard, plastic, wood and other such things. HAP typically focuses on the labour-intensive preparatory phase of an idea, and the making process itself, rather than on the end result. The 2008 work Curver-bak is a typical example of this approach. The work is a 1:1 scale version of a typical household moving box (by the brand Curver), but made in cardboard instead of the usual plastic. Although the object looks ordinary, the preliminary design and execution phase was anything but. In this work, HAP subtly and humorously plays with the boundaries between (utilitarian) object and sculpture, process and result, and banality and art.
