NL - Ruim twintig jaar werken Simona Denicolai (°1972, Milaan, Italië) en Ivo Provoost (°1974, Diksmuide, België) als kunstenaarsduo aan een multidisciplinaire praktijk die ons gewoontedenken en routinegedrag probeert te verstoren. Via protocollen en scenario’s, die ze met veel aandacht voor de eigenheid van een plek, uitschrijven, betrekken ze mensen, objecten en verhalen als ‘medewerkers’ bij het artistieke proces. De uitwisselingen die zo ontstaan zijn ingebed in een lokale realiteit, maar raken ook aan universele thema’s zoals burgerschap, identiteit en solidariteit.
Hello, Are We In the Show? (drawings animatic) bestaat uit 172 originele tekeningen uit een reeks van 344. Ze vormen het storyboard voor de gelijknamige animatiefilm. De selectie tekeningen werd gemonteerd tot een lange passage die voorkomt in de film. In Hello, Are We In the Show? schetsen Denicolai & Provoost een beeld van het dagelijkse leven in het Zoniënwoud bij Brussel. Dieren, planten, bomen, mensen en de nabijgelegen industrie maken hier zonder onderscheid deel van uit. Op de tekeningen zie je naast drijvende zwanen, eekhoorns en andere fauna dan ook lawaaierige passagiersvliegtuigen, auto’s en trucks. Met de film doorbreekt het duo ons verwachtingspatroon: hij heeft niet het lieflijke, onschuldige karakter van een traditionele Hollywoodiaanse animatiefilm, maar stelt de manier waarop we omgaan met de natuur aan de kaak.
FR - Depuis une bonne vingtaine d’années, Simona Denicolai (°1972, Milan, Italie) et Ivo Provoost (°1974, Dixmude, Belgique) forment un duo d’artistes qui développe une pratique multidisciplinaire tentant de perturber la routine de notre pensée et de notre comportement. À travers des protocoles et des scénarios qu’ils élaborent minutieusement pour la spécificité d’un lieu, ils parviennent à impliquer des personnes, des objets et des récits, qui deviennent des « collaborateurs » dans leur processus artistique. Les échanges qui se produisent ainsi sont ancrés dans une réalité locale, mais touchent aussi à des thèmes universels comme la citoyenneté, l’identité et la solidarité.
Hello, Are We In the Show? (drawings animatic) se compose de 172 dessins originaux issus d’une série de 344. Ils constituent le story-board du film d’animation éponyme. La sélection de dessins a été montée en un long passage qui apparaît dans le film.
Dans Hello, Are We In the Show?, Denicolai et Provoost dressent un tableau de la vie quotidienne dans la forêt de Soignes, près de Bruxelles. En font partie, sans distinction, des animaux, des plantes, des arbres, des êtres humains et l’industrie toute proche. Sur les dessins, on voit par exemple, outre des cygnes sur l’eau, des avions bruyants dans le ciel. Le duo d’artistes réussit à briser nos attentes avec ce film : l’œuvre n’a pas le côté gentillet et innocent d’un dessin animé traditionnel, mais dénonce la façon dont nous traitons la nature.
ENG - Artists Simona Denicolai (b. 1972, Milan) and Ivo Provoost (b. 1974, Diksmuide) have been collaborating for over twenty years. Their multidisciplinary practice seeks to disrupt our habitual thought processes and routine behaviour. Through protocols and scenarios, which they elaborate with meticulous attention to the specificity of a place, they involve people, objects and stories as ‘collaborators’ in the artistic process. The exchanges they create are embedded in a local reality, but also touch on universal themes such as citizenship, identity and solidarity.

In Hello, Are We In the Show? Denicolai & Provoost sketch a picture of daily life in the Sonian Forest near Brussels. Animals, plants, trees, people and local industries are an indiscriminate part of the overall picture. The drawings show noisy passenger planes, cars and trucks alongside squirrels, gliding swans and other fauna. The duo confounds our expectations with this work: it does not have the sweet, innocent character of a traditional Hollywood animated film, but instead denounces the way we treat nature.
