Le Décor et son Double

NL – Naar aanleiding van Jan Hoets spraakmakende extra muros-tentoonstelling ‘Chambres d’Amis’ (1986) bracht Buren zijn bekende motief aan in de gastenkamer van Annick en Anton Herbert. 'Le Décor et son Double' was opgevat als een werk in twee delen. Buren had namelijk ook een reconstructie van de kamer voorzien om in het museum te tonen. Met deze conceptuele demarche stelde Buren expliciet vragen bij Jan Hoets idee om actuele kunst in privéwoningen te tonen, de opzet van de ‘Chambres d’Amis’-tentoonstelling. Buren bevraagt met ‘Le Décor et son Double’ daarnaast ook de verhouding tussen ‘model’ en ‘kopie’. De Herberts behielden de interventie in hun gastenkamer. De museale kopie werd niet bewaard, maar in 2011 werd deze publieke helft van het werk in S.M.A.K. gereconstrueerd en opgenomen in de museumcollectie.

ENG – In response to Jan Hoet’s controversial extramural exhibition ‘Chambres d’Amis’ (1986), Buren applied his well-known motif to the guest room of Annick and Anton Herbert. ‘Le Décor et son Double’ was conceived as a work in two parts. Buren had in fact also provided a reconstruction of the room to exhibit in the museum. With this conceptual démarche, Buren posed explicit questions around Jan Hoet’s idea of exhibiting contemporary art in private homes, which is how the ‘Chambres d’Amis’ exhibition was structured. With ‘Le Décor et son Double’ Buren also questions the relationship between a ‘model’ and a ‘copy’. The Herberts have preserved this intervention in their guest room. The copy for the museum was not retained, but the public half of the work was reconstructed in S.M.A.K. in 2011 and incorporated into the museum’s collection.

FR - A l’occasion de l’exposition extra-muros ‘Chambre d’Amis’ (1986) de Jan Hoet qui a fait sensation, Buren appliqua son célèbre motif dans la chambre d’amis d’Annick et Anton Herbert. ‘Le Décor et son Double’ était conçu comme une oeuvre en deux parties. Buren avait en effet prévu une reconstitution de la chambre pour l’exposer au musée. Par cette démarche conceptuelle, Buren s’interrogeait explicitement sur l’idée de Jan Hoet de montrer l’art actuel dans des habitations privées, ce qui était l’enjeu visé par l’exposition ‘Chambre d’Amis’. Avec ‘Le Décor et son Double’, Buren interroge aussi la relation entre le ‘modèle’ et la ‘copie’. Les Herberts ont conservé l’intervention dans leur chambre d’amis. La copie muséale n’a pas été conservée, mais cette moitié publique de l’oeuvre fut reconstituée au S.M.A.K. et intégrée dans la collection du musée en 2011.
