Brandenburg Series - White Hammers

NL – De ‘Brandenburg Series’ van Attila Richard Lukács vloeit voort uit een fascinatie voor de recente politieke geschiedenis en de opkomst van ideologische stromingen zoals het fascisme en het communisme. Lukács creëerde de reeks in de late jaren ‘80 toen hij in Berlijn woonde en zijn atelier vlakbij de Brandenburger Tor gesitueerd was. Deze historische toegangspoort tot de stad werd in 1989 met de val van de muur, die de Duitse hoofdstad bijna dertig jaar doormidden kliefde, een symbool voor vrijheid en belichaamde het verlangen om Duitsland opnieuw te verenigen. De vijfentwintig werken uit Lukács’ ‘Brandenburg Series’, waaronder ‘White Hammers’ en ‘White Cog and Wreath’, verkennen de val van het communisme in Duitsland. De werken, geschilderd op kaarten van de stad, tonen politiek geladen symbolen zoals tandwielen en hamers en kransen van tarwe, maïs en andere gewassen.

ENG – The ‘Brandenburg Series’ by Attila Richard Lukács stems from a fascination for recent political history and the rise of ideological movements such as fascism and communism. Lukács created the series in the late 1980s when he lived in Berlin and his studio was located close to the Brandenburg Gate. In 1989, with the fall of the wall that had divided the German capital for almost thirty years, the historic city gate came to symbolise freedom and embodied the desire for German reunification. The twenty-five works from Lukács’ ‘Brandenburg Series’, including ‘White Hammers’ and ‘White Cog and Wreath’, explore the fall of communism in Germany. The works, painted on maps of the city, show politically charged symbols such as cogs, hammers and garlands of wheat, maize or other crops.

FR – La ‘Brandenburg Series’ d’Attila Richard Lukács découle de sa fascination pour l’histoire politique récente et l’avènement de courants idéologiques comme le fascisme et le communisme. Lukács a créé la série à la fin des années 1980, lorsqu’il vivait à Berlin et avait un atelier juste à côté de la Porte de Brandebourg. En 1989, avec la chute du mur qui coupa la capitale allemande en deux pendant près de trente ans, ce point d’entrée historique dans la ville est devenu un symbole de liberté incarnant le désir de réunification de l’Allemagne. Les vingt-cinq œuvres de la ‘Brandenburg Series’ de Lukács, parmi lesquelles figurent ‘White Hammers’ et ‘White Cog and Wreath’, explorent la chute du communisme en Allemagne. Peintes sur des cartes de la ville, elles représentent des symboles politiquement lourds de sens comme des roues dentées, des marteaux et des couronnes de blé, de maïs ou d’autres végétaux.
