Coal Bunkers

NL – Het Duitse kunstenaarskoppel Bernd en Hilla Becher fotografeert sinds het einde van de jaren ‘50 industriële, functionele architectuur, “gebouwen waar anonimiteit als stijl is aanvaard”. Zo onderzoeken de Bechers via systematische fotoseries de relatie tussen de werkelijkheid en haar mechanische reproductie. Ook in de reeks ‘Coal Bunkers’ (kolenbunkers) keert deze thematiek terug. Negen gelijkaardige nutsgebouwen, in Duitsland, Frankrijk en Groot-Brittannië, zijn op zakelijke wijze vanuit hetzelfde gezichtspunt vastgelegd. Elke vorm van toeval, subjectiviteit, interpretatie en betrokkenheid werd geweerd. Bekende leerlingen van de Bechers, zoals Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer en Thomas Ruff, wenden dezelfde afstandelijke methodiek aan in hun fotografie, maar dan met andere onderwerpen.

ENG – Since the late fifties, the German artist couple Bernd and Hilla Becher have been photographing industrial, functional architecture, “buildings where anonymity is accepted as style”. Using systematic photo series, the Bechers have explored the relationship between reality and its mechanical reproduction. This theme also reappears in the series ‘Coal Bunkers’. Nine similar utility buildings in Germany, France and Great Britain were shot in a business-like manner from the same perspective. Any sort of coincidence, subjectivity, interpretation and involvement was avoided. Well-known pupils of the Bechers, such as Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer and Thomas Ruff, apply the same methodology in their photography, albeit to different subjects.

FR – Dès la fin des années ‘50, le couple d’artistes allemands Bernd et Hilla Becher a commencé à photographier de l’architecture industrielle, fonctionnelle, “des bâtiments où l’anonymat est accepté comme style”. C’est de cette manière que les Becher ont examiné, par le biais de séries systématiques de photos, la relation entre la réalité et sa reproduction mécanique. Cette thématique revient aussi dans la série ‘Coal Bunkers’ (Soutes à charbon). Neuf bâtiments utilitaires similaires en Allemagne, en France et en Grande-Bretagne ont été fixés de manière objective du même point de vue. Chaque forme de hasard, de subjectivité, d’interprétation et d’implication a été évitée. Des élèves réputés des Becher, comme Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer et Thomas Ruff, ont utilisé la même méthodologie distante dans leur photographie, mais en choisissant d’autres sujets.
