NL - Braeckmans foto’s doen erg abstract en in zichzelf gekeerd aan. Toch zijn ze bijzonder subjectief, autobiografisch zelfs. Enkele motieven uit zijn oeuvre zijn gordijnen, lege hoeken, muren en onbevolkte hotelkamers, ‘non-plaatsen’ badend in een onbestemde, suggestieve, intrigerende, mistroostige sfeer van donkere grijstinten. Hoewel we de indruk krijgen dat Braeckman deze verlaten plaatsen heeft ‘gedocumenteerd’, dragen de beelden geen achterliggend verhaal maar staan ze louter op zichzelf. Opvallend is de aandacht die de fotograaf besteedt aan hun textuur en materialiteit. Zijn foto’s zijn tactiele stillevens met een picturale kwaliteit die de details waarop zijn lens focust universeel en anoniem vatten. Hun gecodeerde titels versterken de indruk van onbestemdheid.
ENG - Braeckman’s photos often come across as highly abstract and introverted; and yet they are incredibly subjective, even autobiographical. Motifs running through his work include curtains, empty corners, walls and uninhabited hotel rooms, ‘non-places’ that are bathed in an indeterminate, suggestive, intriguing, gloomy atmosphere comprised of dark shades of grey. Although we get the impression that Braeckman has ‘documented’ these deserted places, the images are devoid of any kind of underlying story; they exist entirely in isolation. The photographer’s focus on their texture and materiality is striking. His photos are tactile still lifes with a pictorial quality that universally and anonymously captures the details upon which his lens is focused. Their coded titles enhance the feeling of indefiniteness.
FR - Les photos de Braeckman donnent une impression très abstraite et repliées sur elles-mêmes. Cependant, elles sont particulièrement subjectives, et même autobiographiques. Quelques motifs dans son œuvre sont des rideaux, des coins vides, des murs et des chambres d’hôtel inoccupées, des ‘non-lieux’ baignant dans une atmosphère indéterminée, suggestive, intrigante, morose de teintes gris foncé. Bien que nous ayons l’impression que Braeckman ait ‘documenté’ ces lieux abandonnés, les images ne contiennent pas d’histoire sous-jacente, mais elles sont simplement elles-mêmes. L’attention que le photographe porte à leur texture et leur matérialité est surprenante. Ses photos sont des natures mortes tactiles avec une qualité picturale qui captent de façon universelle et anonyme les détails sur lesquels son objectif se focalise. Leurs titres codés renforcent l’impression de caractère indéfinissable.
