NL - ‘La meta ed il doppio e l’unita mancante’ is een van Alighiero Boetti’s balpentekeningen. Tussen 1972 en eind jaren ’80 liet hij zijn assistent vrienden en kennissen uitnodigen om grote vellen ruitjespapier zorgvuldig met balpen in te kleuren. Zelf kwam hij nooit in contact met de eigenlijke makers van het werk, waardoor het bedenken en de uitvoering ervan “twee gescheiden maar elkaar aanvullende realiteiten” bleven. Via de titel die betekent ‘De helft en het dubbele vormen de ontbrekende eenheid’, wijst Boetti op de spanning tussen taal en wiskunde, tussen orde en wanorde. Orde vertaalt zich in de symmetrie van de twee delen van de tekening, terwijl de organische inkleurtechniek het beeld doet vibreren en de orde van de monochromie in een veelheid aan kleurtinten versplintert. He himself never came into contact with those who actually completed the work, and as a result, its conception and its execution remained “two separate but complementary realities”. In the title, which means ‘The half and the double form the missing unit’, Boetti refers to the tension between language and mathematics, and between order and chaos. Order takes the form of the symmetry of the two parts of the drawing, while the organic method of colouring in makes the image vibrate and the order of the monochromy fragments into an abundance of coloured tints. The title leads us to suspect that it explains the relations between the two numbers in the work, but then 988 should have been half of 3952. The solution is that half of 3952 and twice 988 both equal 1976, the year the work was created. The grid that served as the basis for the composition of the drawing also represents this numerical relationship visually.
