NL - Een van de motieven in het oeuvre van Oldenburg is de zaag. De kunstenaar verbeeldde het werktuig in talloze schetsen, modellen en sculpturen, of zoals hier, in een krijttekening van een cirkelzaag. Door alledaagse gebruiksvoorwerpen als onderwerp voor zijn werk te kiezen, reageerde Oldenburg op de Amerikaanse consumptiemaatschappij. Niet zozeer vanuit een kritische houding maar eerder vanuit zijn specifieke fascinatie voor gewone verkoopartikelen. “Ik wil de dingen weerspiegelen zoals ze nu zijn, en altijd zonder sentimentaliteit. De feiten onder ogen zien en de schoonheid ervan leren kennen”, opperde de kunstenaar ooit.
ENG - One of the motifs in Oldenburg’s oeuvre is the saw. The artist has depicted the tool in numerous sketches, models and sculptures; or as shown here, in a chalk drawing of a circular saw. By choosing everyday objects as the subject of his work, Oldenburg was reacting to American consumer society. This was less from a critical standpoint, and more from his specific fascination with ordinary products. “I wish to reflect things as they are now and always without sentimentality. Face the facts and learn their beauty.”
FR - La scie est un des motifs caractéristiques de l’œuvre d’Oldenburg. L’artiste représenta cet outil dans de nombreuses esquisses, modèles et sculptures ou, comme ici, dans un dessin à la craie d’une scie circulaire. En prenant pour sujet de ses créations des objets d’usage courant, Oldenburg exprimait sa réaction à la société de consommation américaine. Pas vraiment en raison d’une attitude critique, mais plutôt de sa fascination spécifique pour les articles commerciaux courants. “Je veux reproduire les choses telles qu’elles sont maintenant, et toujours sans la moindre sentimentalité. Regarder les faits en face et apprendre à en connaître la beauté”, déclara l’artiste un jour.
