Variable Piece # 11

Daarbij worden zowel toevals- als logische systemen gehanteerd om concrete gegevens aan variabelen te onderwerpen. Over ‘Variable Piece #11’ vertelde hij: “Ik vroeg aan de bewoners van 36 huizen in een typisch Amerikaans stadje om mee te werken aan een onderzoek dat antwoorden probeerde te vinden op typische vragen als ‘Wie woont hier?’ en ‘Wat doen zij hier?’. De bewoners werden geïnterviewd door studenten van de lokale kunstacademie. Ik beloofde hen 10 dollar voor het schoolfonds per succesvol interview. Twee studenten werkten zes interviews af. Ter documentatie werden drie foto’s van betrokken bewoners gemaakt die samen met de ingevulde enquêtes en foto’s van drie willekeurige huizen die voor het onderzoek waren geselecteerd, werden ingekaderd als het kunstwerk dat uit dit onderzoek voortkwam.”

ENG - Huebler became renowned for his ‘Location Pieces’, ‘Variable Pieces’ and ‘Duration Pieces’, series of works based on photographic and written documentation whose subject was, respectively, a specific place, situation or time. In these series, Huebler focuses on everyday environments, occurrences and actions whose mutual connection is unclear. By depicting, describing and documenting them in accordance with a personally structured arbitrariness, he makes them seem connected. In this way, systems of both logic and chance are employed to subject concrete facts to variables. Huebler told the following on ‘Variable Piece #11’: “I asked the occupants of 36 houses in a typical American town to assist in an inquiry that tried to find answers to such typical questions as ‘Who lives here?’ and ‘What do they do here?’. The inhabitants were interviewed by students from the local art college. I promised them 10 dollars for the college fund for each successful interview. Two students completed six interviews. For the purposes of documentation, three photos were taken of the residents involved. These were framed together with the completed questionnaires and photos of three random houses that had been selected for the inquiry, to form the artwork that emerged from the inquiry.”
