NL - ‘Welttheater >79<’ bestaat uit 366 zwart-wit prints. In de linker beeldhelft zien we telkens twee strakke zwarte vlakken: het doek van het wereldtoneel dat dicht is. Rechts zien we het podium telkens met open doek. Onder de spotlight verschijnt elke keer opnieuw een andere figuur en enkele keren ook een rekenschema. De figuren doen denken aan personages uit sprookjes of aan biscuitbeeldjes ter opsmuk van oude interieurs. De veelvuldige herhaling van dezelfde compositie doet obsessief aan. Het geheel toont zich als een subjectief maar logisch systeem, als een index. Het volledige verloop van een theatervoorstelling lijkt in één oogopslag vatbaar te zijn.

ENG - ‘Welttheater >79<’ consists of 366 black-and-white prints. In the left-hand half of the image, we repeatedly see two austere and unfathomable black planes: the closed curtains of the world theatre. To the right we see the stage, always with the curtain open. Time and time again, a different figure appears beneath the spotlight, and in a few cases also an algorithm. The figures are reminiscent of characters from fairy tales, or bisque figurines of the kind used to decorate old-fashioned interiors. The constant repetition of the same composition feels obsessive. The system as a whole is subjective but logical, like an index. It is as though the full duration of a theatre performance can be captured at a glance.

FR - ‘Welttheater >79<’ se compose de 366 imprimés noir-blanc. Dans la moitié gauche de l’image, nous voyons chaque fois deux surfaces noires rigides: le rideau fermé du théâtre du monde. A droite, nous voyons chaque fois la scène avec un rideau ouvert. Une autre figure apparaît chaque fois sous le projecteur et parfois aussi un schéma de calcul. Les figures évoquent des personnages de contes de fées ou des reproductions de biscuits servant à décorer de vieux intérieurs. La fréquente répétition de la même composition crée une sensation obsessionnelle. L’ensemble se présente comme un système subjectif, mais logique, comme un index. Le déroulement total d’un spectacle de théâtre semble pouvoir être capté en un seul coup d’oeil.
