NL – Veel van Raoul De Keysers werken uit de jaren ‘90 zijn fragiel en minimalistisch. Ook deze compositie oogt eenvoudig, maar niks is wat het lijkt. Als je aandachtig kijkt, zie je dat de achtergrond niet zomaar wit is. Er zitten meerdere kleuren in de verflaag verborgen. De verfspatten geven textuur aan het oppervlak, als was het een (geschilderde) huid. Dit soort werk typeert De Keyser als schilder: hij onderzocht het schilderen zelf en tastte de grenzen van de materie van verf en doek af. “Elk werk is voor mij een soort essay”, zei De Keyser ooit. Hoeveel kon hij weglaten zonder daarbij de essentie te verliezen?
ENG – Many of Raoul De Keyser’s works from the 1990s are fragile and minimalist. Although this composition might seem simple, nothing is quite what it seems. Look carefully, and you will see that the background is not pure white. Several other colours are hidden within the paint layer. The splashes of paint add texture to the surface, as though it were a (painted) skin. This kind of work typifies De Keyser as a painter: he researched painting itself, exploring the material limits of both the medium and the canvas. “Every work is for me a kind of essay”, De Keyser once said. How much could he omit without losing the essence?
FR – Les œuvres de Raoul De Keyser des années 90 sont pour la plupart fragiles et minimalistes. Cette composition n’échappe pas à la règle, mais les apparences sont trompeuses. En regardant attentivement, vous verrez que le fond n’est pas parfaitement blanc. Différentes couleurs se cachent dans la couche picturale. Les éclaboussures de peinture donnent de la texture à la surface, comme s’il s’agissait d’une peau (peinte). Ce genre d’œuvre caractérise le travail pictural de De Keyser: il étudiait la peinture elle-même, en sondant les limites de la matière picturale et de la toile. « Chaque œuvre est pour moi une sorte d’essai », a-t-il déclaré un jour. Que pouvait-il omettre sans pour autant perdre l’essentiel?
