Ghost Shift

NL - ‘Ghost Shift’ bestaat uit een vitrine met daarin een tafelzaag en een kopieermachine. Tijdens de tentoonstellingsperiode komen de kunstenaar en een assistente samen in actie in de doorkijkruimte. Terwijl hij systematisch hout in zo klein mogelijke stukken zaagt, jaagt zij onophoudelijk dezelfde A4’s door de kopieermachine tot één zijde van het papier bijna zwart wordt. Belangrijk is dat de twee acties tegelijk plaatsvinden. Zo ontstaat namelijk fysieke interferentie: meer en meer zaagsel valt op de glasplaat van het kopieerapparaat, zodat de kopieën almaar donkerder worden. De performance eindigt op het moment dat al het hout is verzaagd. Na deze actie blijft het zaagsel in de doorkijkruimte liggen en blijven de onregelmatige stukjes hout en de stapel A4-papier achter buiten de doorkijkruimte. ‘Ghost Shift’ maakt niet alleen de problematiek van verlies aan beeldkwaliteit door reproductie zichtbaar, maar doet je ook informatieverlies ervaren. De performance kan je je enkel nog in je hoofd proberen voor te stellen met behulp van de overblijfselen ervan waaruit deze installatie bestaat.

ENG - ‘Ghost Shift’ consists of a large case with transparent sides containing a table saw and a photocopier. During the exhibition the artist and an assistant carry out separate actions in this transparent box. While he systematically saws wood into the smallest possible pieces, she runs the same A4 sheets through the photocopier over and over again until one side turns almost completely black. It is important that the two actions take place simultaneously. This is because it creates physical interference: more and more sawdust falls onto the glass sheet in the photocopier and the copies consequently become increasingly dark. The performance ends when all the wood has been sawn up. After this action the sawdust stays in the transparent box and the irregular pieces of wood and the pile of A4 paper are left outside the box. ‘Ghost Shift’ not only gives visual form to the issue of loss of image quality through reproduction, but also enables you to experience the loss of information. The only thing you can do is try to imagine the performance with the aid of what remains of it, which is what makes up this installation.

FR - ‘Ghost Shift’ se compose d’une vitrine comportant une scie de table et une photocopieuse. Pendant la période de l’exposition, l’artiste et une assistante font ensemble une action dans l’espace transparent. Tandis qu’il scie systématiquement du bois en morceaux – les plus petits possible –, elle envoie continuellement les mêmes feuilles A4 dans la photocopieuse jusqu’à ce qu’un côté du papier devient pratiquement noir. Il est important de mener les deux actions simultanément. On observe ainsi l’apparition d’une interférence physique: de plus en plus de sciure tombe sur la plaque de verre de la photocopieuse, de sorte que les copies deviennent de plus en plus sombres. La performance se termine au moment où tout le bois a été scié. Après cette action la sciure reste dans l’espace transparent et les pièces irrégulières de bois et la pile de papier A4 restent en dehors de l’espace transparent. ‘Ghost Shift’ ne montre pas seulement la problématique de la perte de qualité de l’image due à la reproduction, il vous fait aussi ressentir la perte d’information. On peut uniquement encore essayer de se présenter la performance à l’aide de ce qu’il en subsiste et qui compose cette installation.
