ICH - DU

NL – De betonnen installatie ‘ICH-DU’ werd door Lohaus ‘in situ’ – op maat van de plek – ontworpen ter gelegenheid van de tentoonstelling ‘Aktuele Kunst in België: Inzicht/Overzicht – Overzicht/Inzicht’ in 1979. Met de opening van S.M.A.K. in 1999 werd het werk verplaatst. De monumentale, gebogen sculptuur bestaat uit op elkaar gestapelde betonnen blokken en verspert gedeeltelijk de doorgang tussen twee museumzalen. De tegengestelde begrippenparen ‘ICH’ en ‘DU’, die aan weerszijden in de massieve wanden zijn gebeiteld, verwijzen naar de afstand tussen mensen en dingen en hoe ze zich ten opzichte van elkaar kunnen positioneren maar nooit kunnen samenvallen. Dit werk is een voorbeeld van de dualiteit die de existentiële denkwijze van Bernd Lohaus kenmerkt.

ENG – The concrete installation ‘ICH-DU’ was designed by Lohaus ‘in situ’ – made specifically for the location – on the occasion of the 1979 exhibition ‘Current Art in Belgium: Inzicht/Overzicht - Overzicht/Inzicht’. When S.M.A.K. opened in 1999, the work was moved. The monumental, curved sculpture consists of stacked concrete blocks and partially obstructs the passage between two museum galleries. The opposing pair of concepts ‘ICH’ and ‘DU’ (‘I’ and ‘YOU’), chiselled on either side of the massive walls, refers to the distance between both people and objects, as well as to how they can position themselves in relation to each other but never coincide. This work is an example of the duality that characterises Bernd Lohaus’ existential thought processes.

FR - L’ installation en béton ‘ICH-DU’ fut conçue par Lohaus ‘in situ’ – aux mesures de l’endroit – à l’occasion de l’exposition ‘Actuele Kunst in België: Inzicht/Overzicht – Overzicht/Inzicht’ en 1979. L’oeuvre a été déplacée lors de l’inauguration du S.M.A.K. en 1999. La sculpture monumentale et courbée se compose de blocs de béton superposés. Elle encombre en partie le passage entre deux salles du musée. Les groupes de concepts opposés ‘ICH’ et ‘DU’, gravés des deux côtés des parois massives, renvoient à la distance entre les gens et les choses et à la manière dont ils peuvent se positionner les uns par rapport aux autres sans jamais se rencontrer. Cette oeuvre est un exemple de la dualité caractéristique du mode de pensée existentielle de Bernd Lohaus.
