NL – Zoals veel sculpturen van Bernd Lohaus uit het midden van de jaren ‘60 bestaat ‘Zwischen/Als/Gegen/Für’ uit meerdere eenvoudige, bijna identieke volumes. De vier verweerde, kegelvormige houtblokken staan naast elkaar en zijn op de bovenzijde in wit krijt beschreven met de woorden ‘zwischen’ (tussen), ‘als’ (als), ‘gegen’ (tegen) en ‘für’ (voor). Door de toevoeging van deze voorzetsels krijgen de banale stukken hout een gelaagde betekenis, zonder anekdotiek of verhaallijn. Enerzijds gaan de elementen een relatie aan met elkaar en met de ruimte waarin ze liggen, anderzijds wordt de verhouding tussen kunstwerk en kijker onderzocht. Net als in zijn meeste andere sculpturen stelt Lohaus met dit werk vragen bij begrippen zoals tijd, ruimte en identiteit.
ENG – As with many sculptures by Bernd Lohaus from the mid-1960s, ‘Zwischen/Als/Gegen/Für’ consists of several simple, almost identical volumes. The four weathered, conical wooden blocks stand alongside one another and have the words ‘zwischen’ (between), ‘als’ (as), ‘gegen’ (against) and ‘für’ (for) inscribed in white chalk on their upper surface. The addition of these prepositions imbues the banal pieces of wood with a layered meaning, without being anecdotal or narrative. On the one hand, the elements enter into a relationship with one another and with the space in which they rest, whilst on the other hand the relationship between the artwork and the viewer is explored. As with the majority of his other sculptures, Lohaus, in this work, poses questions about concepts such as time, space and identity.
FR – Comme de nombreuses sculptures de Bernd Lohaus datant du milieu des années 1960, ‘Zwischen/Als/Gegen/Für’ se compose de plusieurs volumes simples, presque identiques. Les quatre blocs de bois coniques et usés par les intempéries sont placés côte à côte et portent sur leur partie supérieure, à la craie blanche, les mots ‘zwischen’ (entre), ‘als’ (comme), ‘gegen’ (contre) et ‘für’ (pour). L'ajout de ces prépositions donne aux banals morceaux de bois une signification stratifiée, sans anecdote ni récit. D'une part, les éléments entrent en relation les uns avec les autres et avec l'espace dans lequel ils se trouvent; d'autre part, la relation entre l'œuvre d'art et le spectateur est examinée. Avec cette œuvre, comme avec la plupart de ses autres sculptures, Lohaus remet en question des concepts tels que le temps, l'espace et l'identité.
