Money as Barbed Wire: Dollar Sign #10

NL – Jessica Diamond doet via haar werk uitspraken over kunst en de kunstmarkt. Ze is niet geïnteresseerd in megaproductie of megakunst en ateliers vol assistenten of kunst met een hoge productiekost. Haar kunst is handgemaakt. Ze houdt ervan om over haar werk controle te houden en onafhankelijk te zijn. Het stoort haar dat kunstenaars een slecht statuut hebben en pleit ervoor om deze problematiek aan te pakken. In het jaar waarin Diamond de serie ‘New Economic Shorthand’ rond dollartekens maakte, ontstond ook de reeks ‘Money as Barbed Wire’. Ook hier vergrootte ze dollartekens, maar dit keer schilderde ze deze alsof ze uit prikkeldraad bestaan. Diamond maakte dergelijke tekeningen in graffiti-stijl op papier in een periode van zware socio-economische ongelijkheid.

She eschews large-scale production or mega-art and studios full of assistants, not to mention art that is expensive to produce. Her work is handmade. She values her independence and being able to control her output. Diamond is disturbed by artists’ low status and takes action to address the issue. The series New Economic Shorthand, based on dollar signs, and Money as Barbed Wire were created concurrently. She also enlarged dollar signs in the latter series, only this time painting them as if made of barbed wire. Diamond created these kinds of graffiti-style works on paper at a time of rampant socio-economic inequality.

Elle aime garder le contrôle sur son travail et être indépendante. Le statut difficile des artistes la dérange et elle milite pour que ce problème soit résolu. Durant l'année où Diamond créa la série 'New Economic Shorthand' autour des signes du dollar, la série 'Money as Barbed Wire' vit également le jour. Là encore, elle agrandit les signes du dollar, mais les dépeint cette fois comme s'ils étaient faits de fil de fer barbelé. Diamond réalisa ces dessins de type graffiti sur papier lors d'une période marquée par de graves inégalités socio-économiques.
