Nu Cave

NL – ‘Nu Cave’ omvat de volledige inboedel van een autowerkplaats die Hultén verwierf toen deze werd ontruimd. Elk voorwerp werd vervolgens eenmaal gebruikt, terwijl dit op video werd vastgelegd. De inboedel is fysiek in de tentoonstellingsruimte aanwezig, maar zit verborgen in een rek achter een valse wand. Het verhaal van de voormalige autowerkplaats wordt niet verteld aan de hand van het tastbare gereedschap dat er jarenlang is gebruikt, maar via de gefilmde voorwerpen op de monitoren. Naar analogie van Plato’s ‘Allegorie van de grot’ laat Hultén ons in ‘Nu Cave’ slechts ‘schaduwen’ van de verborgen inboedel zien. Want hoewel alle werktuigen ooit met een welbepaalde functie voor ogen werden ontworpen, bieden ze slechts fragmentair zicht op hun vroegere gebruik en context, die nooit meer helemaal te reconstrueren vallen. ‘Nu Cave’ doet denken aan ‘Wirtschaftswerte’ (1980) van Joseph Beuys, een van de spilwerken binnen de collectie van S.M.A.K. Beuys’ installatie bestaat onder meer uit een rek met van kleur verschoten voedselverpakkingen en confronteert ons met de toenmalige scheiding tussen communistisch Oost- en kapitalistisch West-Duitsland.

ENG – ‘Nu Cave’ includes the entire contents of a car workshop that Hultén acquired when it was vacated. Each object was then used once, while this was recorded on video. The contents are physically present in the exhibition space but are hidden in a rack behind a false wall. The story of the former car workshop is not told through the physical tools that were used there for years, but through the filmed objects on the monitors. In line with Plato’s ‘Allegory of the Cave’, Hultén shows us in ‘Nu Cave’ only ‘shadows’ of the hidden contents. For although all the tools were designed with a specific function in mind, they only offer a partial view of their previous use and context, which can never be fully reconstructed. ‘Nu Cave’ is reminiscent of ‘Wirtschaftswerte’ (1980) by Joseph Beuys, one of the seminal works in the S.M.A.K. collection. Beuys’ installation includes a rack of faded food packaging and confronts us with the separation between East and West Germany, which were then, respectively, communist and capitalist societies.

FR – ‘Nu Cave’ comprend tout le contenu d’un atelier automobile en liquidation dont Hultén a fait l’acquisition. Chaque objet a ensuite été utilisé une fois, ce qui a été enregistré sur vidéo. Le contenu est physiquement présent dans l’espace d’exposition, mais est caché dans une étagère derrière un faux mur. L’histoire de l’ancien atelier automobile n’est pas racontée à partir des outils concrets qui y ont été utilisés pendant des années, mais à travers les objets filmés sur les moniteurs. Par analogie avec l’’Allégorie de la caverne’ de Platon, Hultén ne nous laisse voir que des ‘ombres’ du contenu caché. Car même si tous les outils ont été conçus jadis pour remplir une fonction bien déterminée, ils n’offrent aujourd’hui qu’une vision fragmentaire de leur ancien usage et de leur contexte, qui ne pourront plus jamais être entièrement reconstitués. « Nu Cave » fait penser à ‘Wirtschaftswerte’ (1980) de Joseph Beuys, une des œuvres phares de la collection du S.M.A.K. L’installation de Beuys se compose entre autres d’une étagère pleine d’emballages de produits alimentaires décolorés par le temps et nous confronte à la séparation survenue à l’époque entre l’Allemagne de l’Est communiste et l’Allemagne de l’Ouest capitaliste.
