Schoorsteen in de wolken (Palais des Boosaards)

NL – De titel van dit werk bevat een woordspeling op Beaux-Arts: Schone Kunsten – Boze Kunsten. René Daniëls zei erover : “Ik vond het boven alles een grappige woordspeling. Boosaardigheid heeft met een bepaalde levendigheid te maken, met emoties, wild gedrag. Het trok me aan om dit in combinatie te brengen met Schone Kunsten, gecultiveerde emotie. De titel verwijst ook naar enkele kunststromingen, zoals CoBrA en expressionisme, maar er zitten ook verwijzingen in naar de kunst van Marcel Duchamp.”

De gelaagdheid van de titel gaat ook op voor het schilderij zelf. We zien een met veel schwung geschilderd beeld, opgebouwd uit losse, speels geborstelde vlekken, lijnen en vale kleuren. Het beeld is sterk gefragmenteerd. Contouren en kleurvlakken lopen in elkaar over. Uit de veelkleurige vlekken – de ‘wolken’ uit de titel – doemen twee ogen op. Plots herkennen we ook een neus en een mond, naast een spookachtige figuur en een stuk schoorsteen. Een ogenblik later lossen de vormen weer op in het geheel van de abstracte compositie.

‘Schoorsteen in de wolken’ behoort tot een schilderijenreeks uit 1983 waarin de boosaardige muze het hoofdthema vormt. In de reeks reflecteert Daniëls over kunststijlen en artistieke visies, waaronder het expressionisme van CoBrA en de post-retinale theorie van Marcel Duchamp. Daniëls wou uitdrukken dat ze achterhaald waren in de tijd waarin hij deze reeks maakte.

ENG - Schoorsteen in de wolken (Palais des Boosaards) Chimneypiece in the clouds (Palais des Boosaards) The title of this work is a pun on the French word Beaux-Arts, which is ‘fine arts’ in English and schone kunsten in Dutch. Beaux-Arts sounds like ‘boozaar’ to Dutch ears which, in turn, conjures up the word boosaards, meaning villains. René Daniëls has said of this work: “I thought it was an amusing pun more than anything else. ‘Villainous arts’ conjures up passion, emotion and wildness. This made me want to link it with ‘fine arts’, which relates to the idea of cultivated emotion. The title also references certain art movements, such as CoBrA and Expressionism, but equally alludes to Marcel Duchamp’s work.”

The layered title is also reflected in the work itself. It has been painted with immense verve and is composed of flamboyant, playful areas of brushwork, together with lines and pale colours. It is a highly fragmented image. Contours merge with patches of colour. Two eyes loom out of these multicoloured areas, which are the ‘clouds’ of the title. We suddenly recognise a nose and a mouth, next to a ghostly figure and a chimneypiece. A moment later, the shapes dissolve back into the larger abstract composition.

Chimney in the Clouds is one of a series of paintings from 1983 on the theme of the evil muse. In these works, Daniëls reflected on various artistic styles and visions, including the Expressionism of CoBrA and Marcel Duchamp’s post-retinal theory. During the making of the series, Daniëls felt that these approaches had long outlived their usefulness.

FR – Cheminée dans les nuages (Palais des Boosaards) Le titre de cette œuvre contient un jeu de mots sur Beaux-Arts: Beaux-Arts - Méchants Arts. René Daniëls en disait: "Je trouvais que c'était avant tout un jeu de mots amusant. La méchanceté se rapporte à une certaine vivacité, à des émotions, à des comportements sauvages. J'ai eu envie d'associer cela aux Beaux-Arts, à l'émotion cultivée. Le titre fait également référence à certains mouvements artistiques, comme CoBrA et l'expressionnisme, mais également à l'art de Marcel Duchamp".

La stratification du titre vaut également pour le tableau lui-même. Nous y voyons une image peinte avec beaucoup d'énergie, composée de taches, de lignes et de couleurs pâles brossées de manière fluide et enjouée. L'image est très fragmentée. Les contours et les zones de couleur se mélangent. Depuis les taches multicolores - les 'nuages' du titre - deux yeux se dessinent. Soudain, nous distinguons également un nez et une bouche, à côté d'une silhouette fantomatique et d'un morceau de cheminée. Un instant plus tard, les formes se dissolvent à nouveau et disparaissent dans l'ensemble de la composition abstraite.

'Cheminée dans les nuages' fait partie d'une série de peintures datant de 1983, dont le thème principal est la muse maléfique. Dans cette série, Daniëls se penche sur les styles et les visions artistiques, notamment l'expressionnisme de CoBrA et la théorie post-rétinienne de Marcel Duchamp. Daniëls a voulu exprimer qu'ils étaient dépassés à l'époque où il réalisa cette série.
