NL - Dit schilderij van René Daniëls boeit in de manier waarop de kunstenaar speelt met ruimte en licht, voor- en achtergrond, binnen en buiten. Hoe de ruimte in het schilderij te interpreteren is, blijft een mysterie. Je kan door het zwarte gat kijken naar de imaginaire ruimte die erachter lijkt te liggen. Het schilderij functioneert dan als een raam. Maar de geschilderde ruimte zou ook uit het zwarte gat naar buiten kunnen komen. Hoe licht en ruimte zich tot elkaar verhouden, is altijd fascinerend. Tentoonstellingsruimtes komen vaak als onderwerp voor in Daniëls schilderijen. Terugkerend motief is een perspectiefweergave van drie wanden waarop vierkanten prijken die zowel als (monochrome) schilderijen (zonder thema), als als vensters kunnen worden geïnterpreteerd. In dit werk is de ruimte deels overschilderd onder een laag zwart. Tegenstellingen als binnen en buiten, voor- en achtergrond en dag en nacht worden in één beeld verenigd. Daniëls zelf wijst op het spel tussen zichtbaar maken en versluieren: “Elke onthulling van een geheim dient de verhulling van een ander geheim.” Is een schilderij een afbeelding van wat we zien? Of weerspiegelt het wat we denken?

It remains a mystery how the space in the painting is to be interpreted. You can look through the black hole towards the imaginary space that seems to be behind it. In this case the painting acts as a window. But the painted area might also be emerging from the black hole. How light and space relate to each other is always fascinating. Exhibition spaces are often the subject of Daniels’ paintings. The recurring motif is a perspective rendering of three walls with squares on them that can be interpreted either as monochrome paintings with no subject or as windows. In this work, the space has been partly covered with a coat of black paint. Such opposing pairs as inside and outside, foreground and background and day and night are united in a single image. Daniels himself refers to the interplay between making something visible and obscuring it: “Every disclosure of a secret serves as the concealment of another secret.” Is a painting a depiction of what we see? Or does it reflect what we think?

FR - Cette peinture de René Daniëls passionne par la manière dont l’artiste se joue de l’espace et de la lumière, de l’avant-plan et de l’arrière-plan, de l’intérieur et de l’extérieur. Comment interpréter l’espace dans cette peinture, cela reste un mystère. On peut regarder par le trou noir vers l’espace imaginaire qui semble se cacher derrière. La peinture fait donc office de fenêtre. Mais l’espace peint pourrait aussi sortir du trou noir. La relation entre la lumière et l’espace est toujours fascinante. Les espaces d’exposition sont souvent le sujet des peintures de Daniëls. Un motif récurrent est la reproduction en perspective de trois parois sur lesquels trônent des carrés qui peuvent être interprétés aussi bien comme des peintures (monochromes et sans thème) que comme des fenêtres. Dans cette œuvre, l’espace est partiellement surpeint sous une couche de peinture noire. Les oppositions telles que intérieur et extérieur, avant-plan et arrière-plan, jour et nuit, sont réunies en une seule reproduction. Daniëls souligne lui-même le jeu entre ‘rendre visible’ et ‘voiler’: “Toute révélation d’un secret sert le camouflage d’un autre secret”. Une peinture est-elle une reproduction de ce que nous voyons? Ou reflète-t-elle ce que nous pensons?
